Set up & Warm up (5 mins)

The aim of the session is to give the players (CoE U9’s) as many touches on the ball as possible in a fun environment. It is broken down into 3 x 15 min parts with a 5 min warm up and cool down. The size of the areas will depend on the number, age and skill

The warm up is a "Number Game". Players are in pairs and count to 3 as a pair. Then tell them that instead of saying number 1 that player has to perform a side step, then 2 then 3. After a few goes tell them that now 2 is a back and forward shuffle, so instead of saying 1 and then two they perform the moves. After a few goes add a jump as number 3. Now the players are calling out no numbers just carrying out the movements against and opposite each other.

Part 1 - Passing (15 mins)

In this part the players will look at short passing. The instep pass should be coached as with the weight of the pass and using both feet to pass.

1. Players play a straight pass and take as many touches to receive before passing back.

2. One player now passes and moves to the other side of the cone to receive the next pass, do this to 5 pass then swap. Look for players being on their toes.

3. Now both players move after they have passed. Get them to change direction and keep the receiver guessing.

4. Players now pass and follow the pass, the receiver moves to a different side and turns to make a pass.

Part 2 - Running with ball (15 mins)

In this part the focus is on running with the ball. Look for the players to run with head up, few touches and moving at pace. Also the "big touch"

1. RED - Players will take the big touch and run to the end of the lane. They will turn and then perform a roll over to the cone across from them and forward etc.

2. GREEN - Same as RED but now the players perform a tic tac (foot to foot)

3. YELLOW - Players now run but not in straight lines on the inside corridor but burst with speed on the outside.

4. BLUE - Players now move to the end of the corridor and perform a turn / stop and pass it down the outer corridor to the next player who goes.

Part 3 - 1v1's (15 mins)

Here players will work on 1v1 (passing, running with ball, turning). Rotate receiver to server, server to line.

1. To begin the server just passes to the receiver and he will run through a cone goal of choice. Look to weight of pass, big first touch and moving at speed.

2. Now the server will move to cover a coned goal forcing the receiver to go through the other.

3. Now the server will move out to press and try to stop the receiver going through the goal of choice.
