Everton Diamond Passing and Turning (20 mins)

Everton Diamond Passing and Turning

4 players with one ball get in a diamond shape (cones set out 20 yards deep and 12 yards wide) with a player on each cone

The first player passes to one of the wings, receives it back, then passes to the other wing, receives it back and switches the ball to the other side of the diamond.

Players on the wing should think about the cone as a defender and try to make space and receive the ball with the far foot from the passer. Encourage the use of both feet and movement as success increases.

Once the rhythm is there have the players on the edges work a turn as they receive, then work a turn back to where the ball came from and pass it back.

Increased difficulty can be calling out a turn for them to use, reinforcing using the far foot from the defender when dribbling and making sure to create space before receiving the ball with a proper check off. All of the details that have been worked in the turning drills should be applied here as well.

Set Up

Diamond 20 long by 10 wide with a cone 10 yards off one of the tips.

2 players at the start with a player on the 2 tips and one player on an edge.

Play

Ball is passed from player 1 to player 2, then set to player 3 and then sent to player 4.

Player 4 dribbling to one of the sides and works a turn to go to the other side, works a turn again back to the other tip where he works a trick on that cone and then fills the back of the cue.

After player 1 passes to player 2 he takes the spot of player 3, Player 3 takes the spot of player 2 and player 2 takes the spot of player 4.

Details

Player 2 and 3 start with check offs, be sure with player 2 to check shoulder, fix shape, receive on the half turn and lay a nice set pass into the space in front of where player 3 will receive the ball. Player 3 must time his check off with player 2 and get onto the ball in the space and work a pass with the closest foot to the ball to play around the cone to player 4.

Player 4 must time his run to move laterally away from the play to get back to the ball on the ball side of the cone and then work around the cone with his dribble.

When player 4 is dribbling to the cone, player 2 moves towards the cone as a passive defender to remind player 4 to use the far foot from the ball.

When player 4 works a turn and moves to the other side, player 3 must work to the cone to again apply some passive pressure the the ball carrier.

The dribbler must remember the turning details we have done before.

6 Goal Game Switching Play

2 Teams work to score on the opposite 3 goals. Key to the game is to work on switching the play. You can make the center goals worth more points and you can have floaters to ensure more success as you see fit. You can also indicate only 1 or 2 of the goals that can be scored upon in order to force the players to think a bit more about where they are going.
