Shielding Opposed Practice
2 boxes 15y by 15y. 3 attackers with 1 ball each, 1 defender and one outside player.
REINFORCE THE COACHING POINTS MENTIONED IN THE PREVIOUS EXERCISE.
The players in the middle with a ball are looking to shield the soccer ball so the defender (blue) cannot get the ball. If the defender thinks they are going to lose they can pass it to the outside the player, they will then swap positions (outside players can move anywhere on the the outside). If the defender wins the ball and keeps it, the attacker who lost the ball will become the defender. Swap the defenders regularly and the outside players if they are not involved.
Progression/Adaptation
- 2 defenders, 2 attackers, 1 outside player
- Players on the outside have to do 10 toe taps before they can receive a ball from a middle player.

Shielding Technical Practice
Players get into groups of 2. 1 player starts with the ball and is protecting it from their partner who is looking to take it from them.
Coaching Points:
- Players should be on their toes so they are able to move the ball quickly if the player trys to come around and get it
- The player shielding it should be side on and between their partner and the ball
- The ball should be away from their body but under control
- Get the players to use their body as a shield
Players will play for 1 minute and the player who starts with the ball wants to keep it for that minute, if their partner gets it they are looking to win the ball back in the remaining time.
Can I also use moves to keep the ball away from my partner, constant changes of direction are needed in order to protect your ball.
You can also swap partners to give players a different challenge.
