Texans Passing Drill (10 mins)

Texans passing drill

•In a group of 4 with 1 ball get in single file with 2 people on the ends and 2 in the middle with the ball on one of the ends. 2 yards should be between each player in the row.

•The ball passes to the closest person in the middle, then back to where it came, then sent to the next person in the middle, back to the other player in the middle and finally across to the other side of the grid.

•It is important that the player who received first in the middle make an accurate pass back to where it came and then move to the side about 1 yard to allow space for the pass to go past him/her to the other player in the middle. Then the player comes back to the middle to receive the pass and send it to the other side.

Texans on a larger scale

•Exact same format as above but now 5 yards between each player in the row. Increase the distance if success is attained.

•More focus now on talking when passing, using one touch if possible and moving after a pass is made. The 2nd player in the middle (furthest from the ball) needs to keep deep in order to allow for their pass back to the other player in the middle to be a pass back (set pass) and not sideways.

•Increased levels of difficulty can be a pass in the air to start it (if not able to pass it in the air, the ball can be thrown to force the receiver to work a pass that is air born). You can also add in all sorts of combination plays from this set up.

Passing under pressure

Set Up

10 x 10 grid with manequins or cones set in the middle with 3 players behind each manequin.

Coach feeds the ball to a player and the player opposite him puts pressure on the ball. The player receiving the ball passes to one side of him and then moves to the opposite side. This sequence then continues. The player putting pressure on the ball fills the back of the cue that he runs to.

Details

Good first touch

Eye contact with who you pass to

Recognize what side the defender pressures and pass to the opposite

Player not receiving the ball should recognize that means he is pressing and get going early.

3 Teams possession

3 Team Possession

Divide your group into 3 teams. Make the space appropriate for the age level and number of players you have. 2 of the 3 teams are on offense, 1 is on defense. Once the defense wins the ball, the color they won it from is now on defense and play continues.

Great for working transition from O to D and vice versa, also great for giving your offense time on the ball to learn to possess the ball. Make it more challenging with limit of touches, number of passes for a point, must be a combination play etc.
