Warm up

Aim

Warm up players for the session

Develop dribbling skills

Develop aerobic and anaerobic ability of players

Progress players ball control

Activity

Part 1

Each player has a ball

Players begin by dribbling around the field as a general warm up

Players are encouraged to used both feet and all parts of the foot to dribble and perform turns

Part 2

For 30 seconds players dribble as fast as they can (anaerobic system) continuing to to use both feet. After 30 seconds the players get 30 seconds rest in which they should continue to dribble around slowly

This is repeated four times

Part 3

Players are shown different skills such as 'toe taps', 'the V' and 'rolling the ball'

Players perform these skills shile dribbling around the field

This is done to develop players ball control and skills with all parts of the foot and should be practiced at home to help players develop faster

Part 4

Players continue to work on their ball mastery through juggling

Ball Mastery

Aim

Focus on player’s technique and ball mastery

Develop players touch whilst stressing their anaerobic energy system to simulate game situation

Activity

Players set up in groups of three- the player in the middle is the one working between the two players on the outside

The two players on the outside have the balls

The player should work at their maximum ability moving between the players with explosive speed. The player working needs to focus on their technique, accuracy and touch in all of the progressions

Players work in the middle for 30-40 seconds and then rotate meaning they rest for two turns and work for one

Progressions

1. This exercise is shown in 1

The ball is played in from the player at A to the player at B. The players at B's first touch needs to be out of their feet on an angle back towards player A. This touch should set up the second touch for a pass back to player A

Player B will then turns and perform the same two touch movement receiving the ball from player C

This exercise will be performed with both inside and outside of the foot.

The idea is that if player B is shut down by a defender their first touch will take them around that defender

2. The aim of this exercise is to get players used to 'facing up' and receive the ball so that they can go forwards

Player B always starts from the back of the square. When the ball is played he/she moves towards the ball getting their body into a side on position. The player receives the ball with their furthest foot, opening their body so that they are now facing player C. With their second touch the player passes the ball to player C

Player B then makes their way to the back of the square and repeats the exercise with the other foot

3. This exercise is show players how exercise 1 can transfer into a game like situation

Player A plays the ball into player B's feet and then sprints to close down player B as a passive defender.

Player B's first touch is out in front of them on a diagonal so that they can take the ball around the defender.

Player A then becomes the attacker and player C the defender

Possesion

Aim

Continue to develop players ball mastery skills in a game like situation

Develop players movement and sense of awareness

Activity

One player from each team starts at both ends of the field. This player can move along the line to try and make and angle for a pass. When a player from the middle passes the ball to a player on the outside, they then become the outside player and the player on the outside is now on the inside.

The aim is to move the ball from one end of the field to the other playing the player on each end.

Emphasis is placed on the skills worked on in the session- first touch, facing up etc.

Game

Aim

Continue to develop player’s ball mastery skills in a game like situation

Develop player’s movement and sense of awareness

Activity

The field is set up so that teams have two mini goals to aim at. This is to encourage players to turn and play out when one side gets shut down

Players must have a minimum of two touches. This is to encourage players to take a touch before they play the ball. It is important that players are comfortable on the ball when under pressure

Played are encouraged to use the whole field (which is encouraged by the two goals) and always know what is going on around them
