Active Warm-up with Dynamic Stretching (15 mins)

Organization:24x24 grid - Cones 8 yards apart. Have one less ball than there are players, in center flags.

Activity:On coaches command players move left or right, the number of cones coaches instruct. ie: right, high knees, 4 cones. left, side step 3 cones. Once coach yells ATTACK, each players sprints to center flags, dribbles a ball back to an open cone, does 10 toe touches on top of ball, then returns ball back to center, then sprints back to an open cone. The one player left without a ball must remain in center flags doing jumping jacks until all players have returned all balls and are back at an open cone. Then that player will go back to an open cone and resume left or right commands from coach.

Variations: Do periods of varying intensity, active warm-up with dynamic stretching intervals. Be creative. Mix up sprinting with stretching, so sprint left, 5 cones, then open the gate, right 4 cones. Side step, left 2, side step right, 3, close the gate right 4, etc.

Coaching Points: Players need to not leave their man in the middle long. Don't leave him hanging, be a team player, dribble with control, close to body and quickly return ball to center to save their player in the middle.Must look up while dribbling to find an open cone quickly.

Progression One, First touch (10 mins)

Organization: Cones, 10 yards apart, 20 yards from player to player lines. Two balls, one for line A and one for line D.

Activity:C runs to center to recieve pass from A, C then dribbles around center defender and then passes back to line C. Then switch, D runs to center where player recieves pass from B, D dribbles around center defender, then sends ball back to line D. Next, A runs to center to recieve pass from line C, etc. Keep repeating, should move quickly.

Variations:Progression One: Recieve pass and quickly move around the defender.

Coaching Points: Speed, accelerate to recieve ball quickly, on toes ready to recieve. Keep ball close to body. First touch is critical to move around the defender safely.

Progression 2, ball control (10 mins)

Organization:Cones, 10 yards apart, 20 yards from player to player lines. Two balls, one for line A and one for line D.

Activity:First player in Line C runs to center (1) to recieve ball from line A (2), he turns back to Line C and passes to player at C cone (3), then makes a run around center defender (4), Line C player passes back to left of defender (5), player in center quickly passes back to line C (6). That player then returns to back of line C where he came from. Same thing with D to B, then repeat. Should move quickly.

Variations:Progession 2: Give and go pass.

Coaching Points:Speed to recieve pass, on toes, ready to recieve. Make good, strong passes that your teamate can control. When turning with ball, turn body away from center defender, then turn quickly, accelerate around defender to recieve ball quickly. Players all need to be on their toes ready for this to work smoothly and quickly.

Progression One: 1v1 (10 mins)

Organization:2 pug goals near each sideline. Coaches have all the balls in the center. Create two lines A and B at half line. Start with a one player in each pug goal who is a defender.

Activity:Each line moves independently from one another to get more players working at one time. Coach passes to player in the front of the line (1), player dribbles taking on the defender 1v1 (2), then shoots on pug goal. If player misses, he becomes the defender for the next player and the original defender moves to the back of the line. IF PLAYER MAKES PUG GOAL, then he continues to big goal where coach plays a ball just outside goalie box (4), player runs (5) and shoots from outside the 18 yard line (6).

Variations:Switch players to other line after a sufficient period of time to work on opposite foot. For a competition, have players keep track of how many goals they scored, on net in the big goal. Can have an elimination round between top scores to see who the top dog is! Players not competing can give passes and be defenders. Can also add a keeper for added pressure.

Coaching Points:Footwork is key. Keep ball close to body and sheilded away from defender. Once the attacker needs to accelerate passed the defender, make that move with confidence and don't hesitate. Once they get passed the defender, shoot quickly. They do not need a large window to shoot the ball. They must beat the defender before they can shoot, no shooting the second they recive the pass from coach. Shooting on big goal, pick a corner of the net, high or low.

Progression Two: 2v1 (10 mins)

Organization:2 pug goals near each sideline. Coaches have all the balls in the center. Create two lines A and B at half line. Start with a one player in each pug goal who is a defender.

Activity:Each line moves independently from one another to get more players working at one time. Coach passes to player in the front of the line (1), player dribbles taking on the defender (2), passes to teamate (4), makes a run passed the defender (4) and recieves a pass(5), then turns and shoots in pug goal (6). If player misses, he becomes the defender for the next player and the original defender moves to the back of the line. IF PLAYER MAKES PUG GOAL, then he continues to big goal where coach plays a ball just outside goalie box (7), player runs (8) and shoots from outside the 18 yard line (9).

Coaching Points: Staying onside is key. Can the attacker stay onside, wait to make his run until his teamate has kicked the ball. Coach the teamate to pass quickly (5) so the attacking run (4) stays onside.

scrimmage (20 mins)

Organization:40x65 - Set up 3 game balls on small cones at each endline. One game ball. Small sided scrimmage to reinforce coaching point at end of session.

Activity: Divide teams equally, to score the player must dribble into any ball at their opposing endline and knock the ball off the cone with their ball. Can't shoot at it, must dribble it off. To reinforce the coaching point, for this session, players must have a give and go before they are allowed to score. Back pass to teamate, a run around a defender then recieve ball, only then can they score. Coach will call SCORE when they feel the play has been executed sufficiently enough to score. The give and go can happen from any position. If the defensive line executes this skill, they are free to score anytime until change of possession, at which time it always resets!

Variations: Can demand a switch of the field if teams are not spacing well, or get caught ball watching too often.

Coaching Points:Keep spacing and have good field awareness.
