Coaching points (defenders)

- stay together, don't get split

- first player press, second player diagonally behind

- anticipation of pass

- trigger for aggressive press (lofted pass, poor touch)

Questioning (to defenders)

- Where don't you want the pass to go?

- Which triggers may tempt you to press aggressively?

Pressing (15 mins)

Both teams number 1-8 and sequence players in and out in order.

Reds pass in from the feeder/target player A1 and combine to get the ball to A2 by passing thru the middle gate. This is a goal.

The 3 blues combine to press and force reds to play backwards and sideways and prevent the forward movement.

If reds succeed, swap one of the 3 blues and restart the game in the other direction.

If blues win the ball they play out to a team mate. The next blue swaps in, and the game restarts at A1 (or A2).

Play for 5 mins. Then swap teams over.

*close down man on ball

*arc run to screen 1 passing option

*2nd defender cover

*3rd defender alert to compactness

*triggers for aggressive press - poor touch, position,

*decision making - aggressive press or patience

Progression 1:

Increase the goal zone to make it easier for the reds to score and more difficult for the blues to press. Going to 6v4 in the box is another option.

Progression 2:

When the blues pass out the game restarts with them aiming to achieve the same goal but at B1 and B2. The game flows but allow time to get the numbers adjusted to 4v6 in the box.

Game 1 (10 mins)

Blues play 4-2-3, and reds play 3-3-1. 9 blue v 7 red.

For blues only CB, FB and WM can play in the wide channel. FB and WM only play wide.

No restrictions for reds except that only 9 can go in penalty box when out of possession.

Blues attempt to score as normal while reds purpose is to force them wide and/or backwards.

Blue GK plays out to CB and reds press.

*9 arc run to screen pass across to other CB

*11 alert for pass going to blue 2

*all other players aware of passing options to close down.

Game 2 (10 mins)

If blue play out thru CDM reds 11 press to force play back to CB or wide to FB but screen pass to WM 7.

Red 8 covers 11 while run screens pass to blue 9.

Reds 9 and 7 recover.

Progression : . Even up the teams to be 3-4-1 and remove zonal restrictions except that in possession teams must have 1 player in each channel. Prevents too much overload and allows pressing to succeed by finding an out ball.
