Passing warmup triangles (15 mins)

Organization: Groups in three's with 1 ball

Instructions: Continually move to create the biggest triangle you can inside area. Pass in triangle. Don't let ball collide with other players.

Coaching Points: Move to create passing lane - Pass with pace so lane does not close - communicate

Progressions: Build new triangle with new players every time. Better communication.

Activity 1 - Double pass (15 mins)

Organization:

20x10 yd areas

4 players per group, 2 in each color set up as shown, 2 balls per group

Instructions:

- player in middle checks away from ball then checks back at an angle to either side, player with the ball plays the ball to receiving player as they reach the cone on the side

- player in the middle receives the ball and plays back to the same player

- first player now plays longer pass to the third player

- third player moves along the opposite line to find the passing lane

- Third player receives with a positive first touch and dribbles at speed back to beginning line

- each player rotates up one position

- rotation is continued for 2 minute rounds

- count each full rotation as 1pt, keep score in a race to a certain amount or until the round is over

Coaching Points:

- timing of run and pass to receive the ball in the middle of the area near the sideline

- sideways body position to receive

- check back shoulder to observe space before receiving

- receive with the back foot, play pass back with inside of same foot

- or play 1-touch with inside of back foot

- look to play long pass 1-touch

- movement of 3rd player to find the passing lane

Activity 2- Possession vs Penetration (20 mins)

Organization:

- 3 channels

- 4 players in each channel

- Change size and distance based on numbers

Instructions:

- 3 passes and try to switch to back zone on 4th pass

- 2 points scored every time the ball is switch from one side to the opposite side and the receiving team controls the ball. Receiving team gets 1 pt for safely controlling the ball

- Team in middle is defending team

- Can send 1 defender others stay in middle

- If you lose the ball you become defending team

Coaching Points:

- Find moment to open and switch

- Keeping the ball is important so pick moment to switch

- Movement after pass

- Angle to receive the ball

- Awareness of team mates

- Create a triangle

- Bounce straight back if under pressure

- Don't stand still check in check out

- Always watch the ball stay connected to the ball and team mate

- Communicate with each other

Progressions:

- Two touch to speed up play

- One touch movement and angles even more important

- Switch on any pass

Conditioned game (15 mins)

Organization:

6 vs 6 but 3 vs 3 in each half

Instructions:

Players play normal soccer rules but can not enter into opposite half

Coaching Points:

1. Looking to play forward if you can

2. Retaining possession if not

3. If 1 vs 1 can you penetrate by dribbling

Progressions:

1 player may join in when ball enters area
