Receiving in the zone (20 mins)

Instructions

Multidirectional possession game.

Aim for blues is to receive the ball inside the zone and then score a goal.

Reds aim to intercept ball and counter to score in one of the goals.

Grid is split into four quarters to help give understanding of spacing to create space through the middle.

Challenges

Can we do it within 5 passes?

Can we get the ball into all four quarters before scoring?

Progression (10 mins)

From now, after the ball is received, the receiver plays to the bigger goals. They can feed the striker to score, they can combine with a one two to score, or they can score themselves.

You can also use this as an opportunity to coach striker movement and their triggers.

Playing through #10 (30 mins)

Instructions

Using half field. Aim of practice is to get #10 involved in positive attacking moves.

Play starts with CB.

The aim is for the CM to create a scoring opportunity by using the #10.

#10 hasn't got to make the final pass before creating a goal scoring opportunity but we are looking to get him involved in each attack.

Look for the #10 to play in a free role and drop off to create overload in midfield, getting on the ball and creating space for the wingers

Try to coach 3 different passages of plays (down the middle, down the left and down the right)

If the Reds win possession they can score by passing into one of the wide goals or if their #10 can take the ball over the halfway line (within a set time 8-10 seconds),

Points

For #10 - Angles and distances to receive ball - #10 should be on half turn, and coach whether it needs to be front foot (safe side with pressure) or back foot if no pressure.

Work on Cues and Triggers of when to drop off and make those runs to receive the ball. Maybe stay high and deep and then come off to receive when CM receives ball.

For Wingers - play high and wide to create space inside.

For CF - stay high to not kill space where #10 needs to perform. Can also rotate with #10.

For CM - When, where and how to pass the ball. Don't rush the pass.

For CBs - Protect and pivot with play.

For all - communication, focus and be positive.

Challenges

Can we break the screen by stretching the play?

Can we ask questions of the screen by attempting to change the point of entry?
