Warm Up (15 mins)

Organization & Instructions:

Half field set up as shown

Player (A) passes to player (B) who passes back to player (A)

Player (A) passes diagonally to player (C) on the opposite side of the field

Player (C) passes to player (D) who dribbles back to the start

Players move to the next part of the sequence each time: A-B-C-D

Players perform dynamic movements / stretches in between work periods

Driven pass technique

Open body shape

Communication

P - Have both sides play at the same time

P - Long diagonal ball should be played in the air

Four box game (25 mins)

Organization:

35x35 square. 4v4+2. 5yd boxes marked out in each corner.

Instructions:

The objective is to work the ball into a box for a point. Once you have scored in a box you must move to a new box. The game is live the whole time, no stoppages after a score.

(1) You score by dribbling into the box. (This is a more suitable starting point for younger ages.)

(2) P - First touch has to take you out of the box.

(3) P - Two players have to take a touch in the box. (This should encourage quick one-twos in the corners.)

(4) P - Balls in the air. Use blue cones to add a 3yd "lava zone" around each box. Balls can't touch down in the lava zone on their way into the box, a pass must be made in the air. (Balls can touch the lava zone on their way out of the box so that receivers can play to ground.)

Expanded game - 9v7+GK (20 mins)

Organization & Instructions:

Red = 4 Defenders, 4 Midfielders, 1 Attacker

Yellow = 2 Defenders, 3 Midfielders, 2 Attackers

Red team attempt to score on goal

Yellow team score by playing back to coach

Activity starts with coach passing to Red defenders

Coaching Points:

Attack quickly after switching play to take advantage of space

Central midfielders should be looking for the ball constantly

Wide midfielders should maintain width when in possession

Full backs should be looking for opportunities to support wide forwards. e.g. by overlapping

Weak-side full backs - can we get in behind to receive a long ball over the top?
