UEFA B Midfield Support Warm-Up (15 mins)

This is a UEFA B Licence drill looking at Midfield Support.

It will help illustrate to the players the movements and types of passing required. It will introduce the movements and distances needed to accurately play between a high and deeper lying midfielder.

Set-Up - 8 Red Players 8 Blue Players withing a 25x20 grid.

The 8 red players start on the outside with a ball each. The 8 Blue players pair up and work together in the middle of the grid. Play begins with the Blue players moving out to a Red feeder. Once they have moved to a player they will split and one will stay high (giving length) the other will drop deeper. The Red player will pass to the highest player then the Blue players will combine and pass it back out to the Red Feeder. This will continue for 2-3 minute spells then change.

Coaching Points - Movement by Blue Players to receive the ball

- Body Angle when receiving

-Weight of pass from outside to 'set the tempo'

-Short sharp passing combinations between Blue Players.

UEFA B Midfield Support Component 1 (20 mins)

This is a Uefa B Licence Component one drill, looking at Midfield Support. The drill is directed towards one goal and is game related as it is Attack vs Defence. In this occasion I am using half of a pitch.

-Exercise starts with deep lying midfielder/Centre Back.

Option 1 (Left) - Ball is bounced with left midfielder, dragging out the defensive player. This opens the channel for ball to be played to striker. Striker will hold the ball up in a high position, giving the team length. The striker will have two midfield options. the supporting centre midfielder on the inside or the wide midfielder who has made a run down the flank.

Option 2 (Right) - Ball is bounced again with wide midfielder, opening the space for the ball to the striker. The strikers touch will determine the ype of support from the midfielders. If the touch is in towards the park the CM can play a through ball to the on-running RM. If the touch is out wide then the 2 midfielders can overlap each other to cause confusion and provide two passing options for the striker.

Coaching Points - Supporting Midfielders should not be static. Be on the move as the ball travels to exploit the space which will open up as the play progresses..

Supporting Midfielders can offer various options to the attack :-

-Overlap round Wide player

-Attack the box if a cross is on.

-Sit at edge of the box if ball drops out

-Provide a cut-back option

-Provide depth in attack to offer switch option

UEFA B Midfield Support Component 2 (20 mins)

This exercise is a Component 2 for the UEFA B licence. It is a 3 Zone Game looking at Midfield Support in a 4-4-2.

-Middle Zone is a 3v3.

-2v2 in each end zones.

-After 2 passes are completed the ball can be played into thestriker.

-1 supporting mifielders can join the Forward. Making it a 3v2.

*Rule - Midfielder who passes into the striker must go into the end zone to support*. (Will encourage positivity from the midfielders to go beyond)

Coaching Points - Transferring the phases of play worked on in Component 1 into Component 2

Quick movements from the Supporting Midfielders into the Final 3rd.

Varying runs and movement to create goalscoring opportunities and to drag the defenders out of position.

Do not slow the attack down. Do it at speed.

Recover quickly if ball is lost.

Progression 1 - Make the middle zone Two-Touch or Increase number of passes needed.

Progression 2 - In the Final third it is a One-Touch Finish Zone

(This forces the attackers into goalscoring positions)

UEFA B Midfield Support Phase of Play (20 mins)

This is a UEFA B Licence Phase of Play looking at Midfield Support in a 4-4-2.

It will look at the movements and options given by the Midfielders and also the supporting Midfielders & Strikers.

Set-Up Red 4-2-1 Blue 2-4-2

- Ball starts from Centre Backs

- Work the ball forward into the wide areas and look for the Midfielders movement to create space and allow the other players to utilise this space whether it be the Striker or a supporting midfielder (either central or wide).

Coaching Points - Movement by Midfielders in the Final Third to open channels for passes to be played. Quality of Play (Distances, Passes, Touches, Communication).

Un-Selfish runs with or without the ball. ( Checking away from defender or playing a bounce pass will drag out defenders)

Midfielders should be positive and looking to attack the box when crosses are on. They can also provide a cut-back option at the edge.

Playing the ball out wide early and look for the channels to open to hit strikers as early as possible.

Move/Distort the Defence as much as possible and add supporting numbers to the attack to allow ball retention.
