Midfield Play - MDG (15 mins)

Key Factors

Width and Depth of attack. Speed of play, minimal touches. Individual creativity. Creating space as an individual and for teammates. 3rd man runs.

Ball retention v penetration, when and where.

Organisation

CB plays ball in to Midfield, combine together to transfer ball to opposing CB, who act as target players. Players allowed to play, and figure combinations for themselves.

Players can play back to defenders to retain possession on the ball, defenders restricted to 2 touch to represent opposition, as they are unopposed.

I may choose not to mention this rule, whether they can or cannot play to defenders, and see if a player uses it as a solution, or at least asks if they are allowed.

Midfield Play - MDG - CB overload Progression (5 mins)

Key Factors

Decision making, is there space to carry ball in to midfield. By only being able to step out with first touch, this decision has to be made early.

Movement off the ball to create space for others.

Tactical awareness, is there anyone to drop in and cover, player being aware they have to drop in and cover.

Progression 2. Awareness of danger of losing the ball when exposed at the back. when to appropriately use overload. Recovery runs, tactiacl awareness to adopt a covering position.

Organisation

Progression 1, if ball is played back to a defender, he can step in to midfield with the ball (must take first touch out of box in to midfield to step out with it). A midfield player must drop in and fill the space left by the defender stepping forward.

Progression 2. Midfielder is not forced to drop in and cover. Defender can be used to create overload, but if ball is lost, and defending team counter and score before anyone recovers, it is worth 2.

Midfield Play - MDG - Combination Progression (5 mins)

Key Factors

Seeing opportunities for combination

Not to force the combination when it is not on. Use own combination solutions when appropriate.

Organisation

Progression

Demonstrate a certain combination, (in this case one-two around defender). If can acheive this combination and produce end product (pass to target player) worth 2 goals.

Midfield Poss + Pen - SSG (25 mins)

Organisation

Attacking 1-2(4)-2-3-1 v Defensive 1-4-2-1(3)-1

Play begins from attacking Goalkeeper.

Defending team told to attack as quickly as posssible ( if having too much of the ball, time limit condition will be introduced)

Key Factors

Pictures from Drill being brought into SSG

Having looked at the central areas in the Drill, I now want to look at how the wide midfielders influence our midfield possession and penetration.

Recognition of when/how to help retain ball, when to penetrate

- Is ball player under pressure?

- Is there opportunity to penetrate forward?

- dropping short to receive the ball

- runs inside/outside the full back

- reatining width to create space vs creating central overloads

Movement to create space for others to penetrate the defence. (e.g for striker to receive in channel)

Individual Creativity of wide players in 1 v 1 situations.
