SAQ (10 mins)

Organization:

2x 2 yard starting gates

4x 2 yard finishing gates (2 blue in line with and 10 yards from eithr side of nearest starting gate, 2 yellow 20 yards opposite blue)

4-6 SAQ/agility marker cones

players in pairs and split into 2 teams

Instructions:

On coaches command each pair race through the SAQ marker cones in a way designated by the coach (bunny hops, 2 forward 1 back etc.).

When past last marker the player must check over his shoulder, the coach holds up either a blue or yellow pinnie just before the first player does this.

If the coach holds up a yellow pinnie the first player through the yellow gate wins a point for their team (and the same for blue).

Repeat for next pair.

Play first team to x amount of points

Coaching Points:

Your decision is based on the information you receive from checking your shoulder

Progressions:

Teams now split, half go into opposite gate and have balls

-if coach holds up blue pinnie, a double pass must be played and ball stopped in between blue cones to score point.

-if coach holds up yellow pinnie the player must take positive 1st touch toward yellow gate and stop ball in between to score point.

Y-Drill (U8/9)

Organization:

Players work in groups of 4

4 Cones set up in a 'Y' formation, 10 yards apart each from the center cone

Instructions:

B checks away behind cone then checks back in front emulating trying to lose opponent to gain space.

A pass to B, B receives ball and turns to play pass to C then makes run to opposite free cone, C dribbles to start cone.

D steps up to start the rotation and will play pass to A.

Coach teaches 2/3 different receiving the ball techniques/scenarios (example options below):

-player must use 1st touch to turn and take available forward space (outside of foot).

-player must create own space receive on back foot, play with front foot to C player.

-player must play pass 'around the corner' 1 touch to C player.

Coaching Points:

Eye Contact/connection with players.

Quality of check to receive ball.

Check shoulder when check to ball to gain visual information for yourself

Quality of 1st touch and pass

Progressions:

Add defender (semi-opposed)

Add combinations between players

Fully opposed (only if grasped concepts well enough)

Technical (U9/10)

Organization:

As above

3 lines of attack

Instructions:

A starts activity with to in either direction.

B checks to an angle in relation to A 1st touch.

C opens up a through ball passing line for A.

B receives a pass from A.

B opens up and passes to C.

C then dribbles back and gives ball to D.

(Progressions also shown, C plays give and go with B before dribbling back).

Each player moves to new position (follow pass) and the process repeats.

Coaching Points:

- Checks for ball (speed, angles and timing)

- Body position (open to see player with ball and player about to pass to)

- Communication (hands and voice)

- Quality of 1st touch (direction, weight)

- Quality of pass (Accuracy, weight)

- Diguise on pass (reverse pass form A, outside of foot pass from C?)

Progressions:

- add new combinations like double pass etc.

- add pressure (see next slide)

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Semi-opposed (U10/11)
Save Image: Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Semi-opposed (U10/11)

Semi-opposed (U10/11)

Organization:

Set up as above

3 lines of attack

Instructions:

Play begins with player on ball taking a touch out of his feet to one side or another.

Target player reacts to make passing lane whilst defender blocks it.

Middle player checks away and receives ball, opens up and finds target.

Rotation: Passer - Defender - Receiver - Target

Coaching Points:

- Good touch out of feet and head up.

- Movement of target to create passing lane.

- Movement of midddle player to check away - open body (now we should have 2 different passing options on 2 different lines)

- Communication

- Quality of pass, checks, movement, disguise of intentions

More options:

- Allow defender to cut off either line (only with interception not tackle)

- If defender gets really tight them beat them with a touch inside before play pass down the side or play double pass.

- Play in both directions, attackers must try to get ball to target player, and back again through any pass/combination that works (defender can still only intercept).

- If defender steals ball, allow them to counter attack 1v1 whichever way they are facing.

- Defenders now full pressure (see next slide). Keep a score system.

Objective:

- Can we get to target player ASAP without forcing the decision.

- Thought process should be: 1 hit target player, 2 if cant, hit middle player who then tries to hit target player, 3 if middle player cant hit target player either beat defender with 1st touch then play pass to target or play double pass for 1st line player to once again try and hit target player.

- Which pass/combo you play is dictated by the attckers movement and the defender positional decision. Players need to open up biggest passing lanes they can, so angle of pass is well outside defenders stealing raduis.

- play forwards when can, only know if can play forward if check should to gain visual information.

Fully Opposed (U11/12)

Organization:

As above

3 lines of attack

1 defender

Instructions:

Exact same rotation as before but defender is now fully live. Attackers score 3 points each if they can get the ball to the end target by playing directly to him. 3 points if play through middle player without sending ball back. 1 point if have to play double pass to get to target player.

(progression - players can double points playing on way back again)

If defender wins the ball, they play 1v1 in direction facing and score 2 points if dribble over endline.

Coaching Points:

As before

3 lines of attack

Movement to create wide passing lanes to shift defender to have to commit to 1 leaving the other completely exposed.

Can we disguise our intentions/pass to shift defender in direction want to go.

Speed of play

Quality of technical aspects
