Defending 1v1 Technique (10 mins)

-The drill starts with 2 teams of 4 players each on a pitch 60yx40y with 2 goals on each end.

-1 player on each end with different colour and the other 2 different colour players opposite side.

-The ball is rolled from the outside player No 1 movement to the same colour team mate which with 1 touch will pass the ball to the opposite side of the pitch to the opposite team movement No 2

-The team passing the ball become the defenders and the team with the ball become the attackers

-The player who started the play with the 1st pass will make his way in to the pitch movement No3 and will try to recover the ball from the player in possession

-The player in possession will run with the ball and on a 1v1 situation will try to score on the 2 goals on the opposite side.

When the ball has been recovered or the team in possession has scored the play is reversed and the opposite team will repeat the same movements

Key Points:

-Angled approached of player pressurising the ball

-Slow down, be patient, don't get too tight as the defender approaches the attacker

-Appropriate pressure on the ball - don't dive in

- Body position to be the same angle as the angle of approach

-Body position= low, balanced, watch the ball. shuffeling feet movement

Progression: The defender starts by defending up to the half way line only

-Free the defender to defend all the area

-Let the attacker use the player on the side as a support player for the dribble

Defending 1v1 Skill Practice (15 mins)

-The play starts with 60x40yards area with 2 zones of 10y where there will be 2 different colour teams the Reds will be 4 players as the attackers and the Blues outnumbered 3 players on each area.

-There is an inside area where there will be 1 player of each team

The ball starts from 1 side of the 10y box with the Red team in possession they will dribble the ball inside the area and will try to pass the ball to the player in the inside area Movement 1 and 2

-When the ball is in the inside area with the Red player he will try to dribble the Defender in Blue Movement 3 and pass the ball into the other 10y zone Movement 4

-The Blue team are the Defenders and on each 10y box will try to recover the ball and not letting the Red team pass the ball to the Inside area player

-The Blue defender in the Inside area will work on the 1v1 situation and try to recover the ball or intercept the pass to the other 10y box

Key Points:

-Pressure first touch

-Reduce options

-Encourage mistakes

-Cover the angles

-Individual defending technique = close down quickly, slow down as tghe attacker receives, get low

-Timing

-Adjustments as the ball moves

Progression: Restrict the touches,Let the Red team free an extra player and become a 2v1

Defending 1v1 Small Side Game (25 mins)

-2 Teams Red attacking and Blue defending

-The ball starts with the Red team attacking one of the 2 goals on the opposite team.

Key Points:

-Communication; 1 player press, others cover and balance, angles of approach to manipulate attacking play; read clues(bad touch, bad pass, ball played behind, back turned to the game)

-when to high press

Keep moving, read the game, pressure on the ball
