Target Man Warm Up

Organization: Large grid. 4 Target men (1 on each edge).

Instructions: Game is multi directional. Idea is to work the ball end to end, not just maintain possession.

Coaching Points:

Penetrate 1st, possess 2nd.

1) Players must have head up before they receive the ball and anticipate where their pass should go.

2) Constant movement, circulation and rotation.

3) Great communication and signalling is required.

4) Always offer support to the ball carrier (left, right & forward) passing lanes.

5) 1-2 passes to get in behind defender.

6) Constantly checking over shoulder.

7) Should build to a lightning fast tempo.

8) Open body position.

9) Back foot receipt of the ball.

1st Touch

Organization: Diamonds.

Instructions: Players pass around the outside of the diamonds. Only one consecutive double pass allowed. Player in possession must have a player to his left and right at all times.

Coaching Points:

1) Receive ball on back foot, this allows you to break the line and make next pass.

2) Open body position allows player to see both players and possible defenders.

3) Use momentum of the ball to turn, open up and play next pass.

4) Stay on toes allowing players to get in line with the ball.

5) Communication - make sure players are in position and know where the ball is and where you want it.

Progression:

1) Pass can be made before player gets in to position to receive it (replicates playing into space instead of into feet)

2) Quicker passes from combination passing.

Possessing to Penetrate

Organization: 3 boxes in one larger rectangular box. Boxes can be distinguished by colour to help visualise boundaries. Depending upon numbers, 3,4,5,6 etc in each box (3 teams, all in different colour bibs)

Instructions: Team in the middle box defends and can send a prescribed number of players in to the box with the ball to try and get the ball back. Attackers must try to get the ball from the 1st to the 3rd box. The defenders cover both boxes until an error occurs then they swap roles with the defensive team.

Coaching Points:

1) As space is tight, off-the-ball players must work hard to creat passing lanes & support around the ball.

2) Players need to learn to multitask (play the ball around and be aware of the penetrating forward option).

3) Receivers are getting long passes under pressure so need to control and release without getting caught in possession.

4) Receivers need to also anticipate potential passing lanes and move into them.

5) Receivers need to communicate when and where they want the ball & offer themselves.

6) Receivers need to know ahead of time where they can quickly play the pass to avoid being caught in possession.

7) Defenders need to communicate the transition (who goes where) and pressure the ball instantly.

8) Players need to get into the habit of getting their eyes up to look for a potential forward pass.

Progressions:

More passes required

More defenders are allowed in the box.

Possessing to Penetrate.

Organization: 3 boxes in one larger rectangular box. Boxes can be distinguished by colour to help visualise boundaries. Depending upon numbers, 3,4,5,6 etc in each box (3 teams, all in different colour bibs)

Instructions: Defending team is now fixed in the middle for a set amount of time or rotations. Ball can be transfered straight from box to box or by playing a through ball onto an angled run from one of the side players into the end box.

Side players can move and touch the ball anywhere in their lanes but can only enter the final third box by receiving a through ball.

As soon as one side player enters the final third box, another attacker must instantly rotate and take their place.

Coaching Points:

1) Recognise when to make the transition based on visual cues from receivers and also positioning of defenders.

2) Alignment of receiving players to be able to control ball and instantly off load it under pressure.

3) Movement of off the ball players to open up passing lanes.

4) Utilise space and possess the ball until penetrating pass becomes an option.

5) Choice of how to receive from wide player, what kind of first touch?

6) Movement from wide players (checking in and out) can pull defenders out of position and open up passing lanes.

7) Adjust body shape to face forward and have a heads up view, DO NOT get caught with back to goal.

8) Side attackers must be fit and work hard to exploit a quick counter and transition, if they are not constantly putting pressure on the defenders then the drill breaks down.

Progressions:

1) Pick up all inside cones and play with no restriction on movement.

Possessing to Penetrate

Organization: 4 grids (must suitability ofgroup). 9 Players ideal, can be more or less. 1 ball per excercise. Coned off area in middle for defenders.

Instructions: Attackers must play a certain amount of passes (example 5) before being able to play ball into another grid. Defenders must then change when this happens (they communicate this amongst themselves) and there always must be 3 attackers in the grid with the ball and 1 defender (4 players and a ball). Every other zone must have only 1 attacker in it at all times.

Defenders can not go in to a grid until allattackers are in.

If defeners win the ball they must play the ball into another grid.

Coaching Points:

1) When to move

2) Where to move to (support left and right is ideal)

3) Why you move to those positions (to make the defenders job harder to cover ground and passing channels)

4) Role of 2nd and 3rd attacker (constant movement to keep passing lanes open or what are called the 'windows' open). 2nd & 3rd attackers have to work hardest of all.

5) Good weight, speed and accuracey of pass (these should all facilitate the move working correctly).

6) Great communication, both verbally and visually.

Progressions:

Players can now make through runs in order to transition between boxes.

2 balls in and two groups of players active at the same time & 2 defenders can now defend.

All 4 defenders can now defend.
