Screen 1 (20 mins)

This is an exercise to work on receiving under pressure from the front, as in a pressing situation. Example might be a pass played back from a midfielder to a defender who is getting pressed by opposing forward, or from a forward to a midfielder who is getting pressed by his opposite number.

Grid is 30x20 but should be adjusted for ability and desired outcomes.

Single players are positioned several yards in front of stations A and B (inside the grid). All remaining players are split even between A, B, C and D.

Play begins with player from Station A dribbling at pace toward player at Station B. When player A enters the shaded area, they pass to Player B who must drop through the gate along with the ball and can only touch it once it comes through. At the moment the pass is made, the first player from Station C presses hard (but passively to begin), forcing B to evade/sidestep. Player A joins station C.

After player B has evaded the pressing player C, they now drive into the center shaded zone where they pass to the next player from Station A while the first player from Station D presses. Player B then joins station D and the pattern repeats. Player C joins station B.

Coaching points:

-Intense pressing, game speed

-Controlled dropback at appropriate pace by receiving player through the gate, use body feints and directional first touch to use the presser's pursuit/pace against them.

-Passing accuracy and weight, must be through the gate at the right pace

Progressions:

-Make the excercise live by allowing the presser to actually win the ball. Once the receiver has moved ahead of the imaginary line that the gate is on, he is considered to have been successful and the defender must drop off. If the defender wins the ball behind that line, they immediately turn, drive to the center and play continues as before.

-Change the direction of the press, using Stations E and F instead.
