Set Up (10 mins)

Organisation

Create a pitch 80x50 yard, divided into three equal zones.

Divide players into teams of 9 x Red players and 7 x Blue players.

Red team to play 2-2-3-1; Blue team to play 1-3-2

Red team to be coached.

Play commences from Red GK on each occasion.

Aim

Red team seek to score by playing through MF zone. If the Blue team gain possession, they have 10 seconds in which time to score.

Instructions

All Players must remain within their zones.

Ball has to be played through, not over, the Midfield zone.

During progressions, once possession has been lost, all players must return to their original zones as quickly as possible.

Coaching Points

Midfield players to create space for defenders to pass to them through:

a. 'Go to Show'

b. 'Show to Go'

c. Switch

If limited success is being achieved in the MF area, consider removing one of the blue MF players until succcess has been achieved.

Defensive shape when defending - CB's and No.6 narrow & compact - defenders to shuffle across when the ball is in a wide position; defenders try to remain compact i.e less than 10 yards apart from each other;

Encourage players to retain possession by returning ball, for instance to a defender, if no other options are available, and playing ball to the other side of the pitch via goalkeeper.
