Starting Lineup

Basic 1-4-2-3-1 formation as this has proven to be our strongest formation and gives us the most balance.

**************************************************************************

I expect us to play with a level of caution in this game as we are missing so many of our regular players. We are especially challenged by missing our starting #4 & #6 which makes a little more vulnerable in the middle of our defensive team shape.

***************************************************************************

DISCIPLINE! IS THE WORD FOR THE GAME - ALL OVER THE FIELD

DEFENSIVE UNIT

(#1, #2, #3, #4, #5) (ANDREW, BRIAN R, JERRY, ZEBB, LUKE, NATHAN, DONNELL)

 APPLY PRESSURE.....RECOVER CENTRALLY!!!!

COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE!!

(SLIDE/PUSH/DROP)

*1 v 1 individual defensive battles are key....YOU MUST WIN THOSE by being patient, focused on POSITION FIRST, ball second.

*STAY COMPACT and connected as individual players to form a strong unit

*Apply pressure to ball, provide cover/support and ensure there is balance across our unit. Move FAST to cover passes and apply pressure (quick, slow, sideways, low ...our mantra)

*if there is ball penetration, recover centrally

*When the ball goes negative, push higher up the field!!

*Pass off players as they move horizontally across the field....but TRACK VERTICAL RUNNERS!!

*DEFENDING THE CENTRAL AREAS AGGRESSIVELY AND ENSURING WE KNOW WHERE WE ARE IN RELATION TO OUR CENTRAL GOAL AT ALL TIMES (HEAD ON A SWIVEL)

* Do not allow any balls through the back line centrally....make everything go wide!

*GK ROLE: Be conservative, Punch instead of catch whenever possible

 ***************************************************

MIDFIELD UNIT

(#6, #8, #10) (ERIC, SAM, MARTIN, JERRY, BRIAN V, KEVIN, NELS, LUKE, ANDREW C)

CONTROL THE MIDDLE OFTHE FIELD!! . It's super important that we are:

*Strong in our tackles (winning 50/50 balls)

*STRONG COMMUNICATION and connectivity between #6 & #8

*ACCURATE in our outlet passing to our #10, to our wing players etc

*keep the play out in front of our defensive line as much as possible so we are not chasing back to our goal.

*plug the gaps and ensure we are a good shield for the defensive unit.

* #7 & #11 really have to help out defensively more than usual and we almost become a 1-4-5-1 in defensive transition moments

*HOW WELL CAN WE MAINTAIN OUR TEAM SHAPE IN CONNECTION TO OUR DEFENSIVE LINE/ATTACKING LINE

*TECHNICALLY: Ensure we get a good first touch, have our head on a swivel and don't hold onto the ball too long!

*Be a catalyst for our counter-attacking movements:

Go quick.........Funnel the ball centrally to give us left/right options.............creative movements around the ball to unbalance defenders and increase our passing options

**************************************************

ATTACKING UNIT

(#7, #9, #10, #11) (BRIAN V, ERIC, SAM, MARTIN, JERRY, NATHAN)

COUNTER ATTACK WITH SPEED/EARLY RUNS THAT DICTATE PASSING

#9 MUST HOLD THE BALL UP TO ALLOW SUPPORT

* Ensure that our #9 plays as high as possible to take advantage of opportunities in behind their back line!

*DO NOT DRIBBLE THE BALL INTO DEAD CORNERS IN NUMBERS DOWN SITUATIONS. Pull the ball back out and look for support.

*HOW WELL DO WE MAKE EARLY RUNS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF BALLS PLAYED OUT OF TIGHT SPACES (EITHER FROM SWITCH OR LONGER BALL)

*If we get opportunity to attack over the top we take it, otherwise #9 MUST hold up the ball to allow support players to join.
