Passing (10 mins)

Set Up

Five poles are set up in a star.

Each ball is to be passed across the star following the route of the arrows. The ball will be passed to the second pole to the left. Each player follows their pass running through the middle of the star creating an obstruction.

Key Points

1. Identify when to playin 1 touch

2. Peripheral vision/Scanning the pitch

3. Type and quality of pass

4. Shifting/changing the angle of the ball to create a passing line

5. Reading of the game/game intelligence

Passing - Middle Man (5 mins)

Set Up

The players now also have the chance to switch the play through the middle man. The middle man must pass in the correct direction.

Run The Gauntlet

Practice Organisation

*Three channels set up with a mini goal either end.

*Channels are split in half and D starts on line.

*A tries to get past D and score in goal, if he scores or gets tackled he moves to the next channel. Once you have reaced the end you must travel back to first channel.

Learning Objectives

1. Attacker keeps head up, looking at what Defender is doing.

2. Look to run into space.

3. Use changes of direction/speed to go past defender.

Intercepting (30 mins)

Practice Organisation:

*Mark out an area and split it into 4 channels.

*Players set up as illustrated.

*Players look to transfer the ball to each other, defenders must stay in own channel. You can only regain possession by intercepting the ball.

Learning Objectives:

1. Nearest player must press the ball showing towards team mates - curve run.

2. Second player must be correct distance from team-mate, needs to be in a position to stop foward pass.

3. Third player does the same as second.

4. Make sure there are small gaps, and player are not in a straight line.

Defending Outnumbered (3v4) (40 mins)

Practice Organisation

*Area 40x30 yards set out in equal thirds with goals at each end.

*14 players (+2 GKs), with defenders out numbered 3v4 in each end third.

*Practice starts with Neutral players in middle third, serve ball into Attackers & support play from behind, without entering end third.

Objective of practice, Defenders play outnumbered to pvevent Attackers from scoring, gain possession and in to Neutral player to score one point.

Rotate roles of players.

Details

Distance between 3 defenders when being attacked by four opponents.

Communication, changing roles and working with GK as sweeper.

Deflecting attacks away from central goal scoring areas.

Balanced, controlled 1v1 defending skills.

Defenders identifying opportunity to pass or run with ball on gaining possession.

Key Coaching Points

1. Blocking shots.

2. Pressing man on ball and employing delaying tactics to avert attack.

3. Marking and covering

4. Winning ball and quickly playing forward to Neutral player.
