Technical Warm Up

Players pass and move in 10x10 grids. Quality of short passes must be high, along with constant movement. Everything is 2-touch. If tempo starts to drop, add in one 'defender' per grid.

1) When coach calls out "Play!" the players with the ball play a long pass clockwise to the next group, and follow it into that grid.

2) When coach calls out "Play!" one player from the receiving grid will now come and show for the ball, and upon receiving it, open up and play back into their grid. The initial passer follows their pass to the new grid as well.

3) Players combine before joining new grid.

Progression: player from receiving grid must show on an angle; can add in a combination or a long pass, then a short one.

Coaching Points:

1) Quality of passing (short and long).

2) Receiving players' awareness of new ball coming into the grid.

3) Angle of receiving player when they show for ball.

Technical Activity

Setup: 8v8 in a 20x20 grid (2 grids set up to accomodate players). 5 players per team each in a gate along the outside of the grid (alternating colours). Players in a gate can not enter the grid. If there is not enough players for two grids, put one player on each end, making it a 7v7 total.

Organization: Players look to keep possession by passing to their teammates. 10 passes = 1 point.

Progressions: When a player passes to the outside, they exchange places. Limit touches to two touch for inside players, and one touch for outside players.

Coaching Points:

Encourage players to play centrally if possible.

Look for opportunities to play "through" and "around" pressure.
