TRANSITIONING FROM OFFENSE > DEFENSE

Mentality - Transition from Offense to Defense (or vice versa)

Spatial Awareness - Knowing when/where to recover.

Defense Mobility - Recognizing players that are recovering. Identifying the player closest and IN FRONT of the ball to step and delay. Knowing when to press vs. challenge.

Defensive Technique - Body approach / angle / shape.

Communication - Between players to tell teammates when to recover based off of their positioning (in front / from behind / ALONGSIDE / at an ANGLE). And communicating who has press = delay.

Mentality - Patience to win the ball (or delay) as well as, anticipating the next action.

Transition between roles - Once

players have recovered and player has stepped to win the ball, if

player does not win the ball, can player closest and IN FRONT of ball

step to press and delay for player to recover and then step again.

Support / Transition - Numbers around the ball when we do not have possession. Quick transition to expand once we regain it to support the play.

Warm Up (10 mins)

Organization:

Two teams

Two lines of cones (set as shown)

One ball per defender

Extra soccer balls off to the side

Instructions:

1. Player dribbles past the set of cones in front of them and plays a diagonal pass.

2. Upon conceding possession, the player now transitions to defense by sprinting back to the end line.

3. To score, the opposition attacker must play the next pass before the retreating defender crosses the line.

Retreating Defender:

1. Mentality

2. Quick reactions

3. Sprint in straight line

4. Take shortest possible distance

Progressions:

(1) Increase distance of pole

1v1 (10 mins)

Organization:

Two teams

Two lines of cones (set as shown)Every player with ball

Instructions:

1. Player plays 1v1 with opposition defender.

2. As soon as the phase of play ends (i.e. goal scored, ball out of bounds) the player transitions to defense by defending the next 1v1 wave of attack.

3. One point for goal scored as the first attacker, two points as the retreating defender (i.e. transition to defend, win the ball and score in counter goal).

4. All goals must be scored in oppositions half and past the line of cones laid out.

Retreating Defender:

1. Mentality

4. Take shortest possible distance

5. Cut off direct route to goal / shooting lane

6. Apply immediate pressure

2v2 (15 mins)

Organization:

Two teams

Two goals

One end zone

Supply of balls at halfway line

Instructions:

1. Player dribbles to end zone and stops the ball.

2. Upon conceding possession the player sprints around goal before transitioning to defense by supporting 1st defender who has joined the play to protect the goal.

3. The two attackers attempt to to score in opposition goal in a 2v1 scenario before the retreating defender can create a potential 2v2.

4. One point for a goal scored as the attacking team and two points for the team with the retreating defender (i.e. transition to defend, win ball and score in counter goal).

5. All goals must be scored in opposition half.

Coaching Points:

1st Defender:

1. Delay opposition attack - until 2v2

Moment of Transition when....

Lost Possession

In Attacking Half

> Player who lost possession looks to recover

> Player IN FRONT of attacker steps in Attacking Half to Delay for Recovering player

> Player who did not lose the ball but was apart of the attack quickly moves into the defensive half to hold the line, provide coverage and communication to the other two players.

> Once recovering player gets back to re-create the defensive triangle, player decide when to press and win the ball.

> If Acting #6 presses and oversteps/dives, player best in line to provide pressure infront steps to delay until players are ready to press again.

In Defensive Half

> Players (#6) look to force the opposition outside and press when recovering player has made it back and 2nd defender is providing cover.

Gained Possession

In Attacking Half

   > Acting #6 presses and wins the ball:

             Option A - Goal

             Option B - Combine with teammate.

In Defensive Half

   > Player who won possession looks to break the mid-line quickly to counter and take advantage of the 1v1 to goal.

   > Second player can join on attack. They will look to transition from defense to attack and join their teammate to create 2v1 and outnumber their opposition.
