Warm Up:

Use dribbling skills to get the players moving and within their skill work incorporate 1v1 attacking footskills.

Individual Defending 1v1 (20 mins)

In a grid, 10x20, have gates off centered to the sides. Initiate game by playing ball across to opposing team and then close down and play 1v1.

Coaching Points:

-Close down - get to attacker quickly, curved run, while ball is travelling.

-Get close enough to get attackers head down, about arms length away.

-Control - must remain under control, as get closer to attacker take small choppy steps, sideways on.

-Contain - keep attacker to one side, away form goal. Make play predictable

2v2 to gates (20 mins)

Players divided into two teams play 2v2. Pass or dribble through gate to score. Initiate game by defender passing ball into attacker, switch sides after a few minutes so that both teams get a chance to defend.

Coaching Points:

- Close down quickly.

- Under control.

- Contain.

- 1st defender does not necesarily need to win ball, instead delay and force attacker in one direction. Make play predictable

4v4 Small Sided to gates (20 mins)

In a 4v4 setting, split the teams up evenly and have 2 goals Each with a goalkeeper. Players initiate the game with a pass forward toward their target player. Once the game is initiated all four attackers try to score while 4 defenders try to win the ball and counter attack.

Coaching Points:

- Close down quickly.

- Recognize visual cue of when to close down the attacker, while ball is traveling. Defender should arrive at same time as ball.

- Recognize which way to force the attacker, away from goal. Make play predictable.
