Aim:

- To develop individual foot skills and attacking moves, applying them effectively in a 1 v 1 situation.

Duration of session: 1 hour 30 minutes

Number of players: 12

Equipment: balls, 2 sets of pinnies, 4 mini goals, 2 large goals, cones, whiteboard and pen

Physical movement with the ball (15 mins)

Set up:

-small boxes as shown 3 x 3 yards

-25 x 35 yard area

Activity:

-3 red zones and 3 yellow zones as shown.

- split the group into two equal teams.

-each player has a ball and dribbles around the whole area.

-Players mst dribble into a zone and perform different footskills - inside and outside, toe taps, soccer boxes,drags, attacking moves.

-any player that does not get into the square must continue to dribble the ball until a square becomes free.

Progression

-Players go 1 v 1 (red v yellow). Reds attempt to score in red square, while yellows attempt to score in the yellow squares.

Dosage:

Intensity: Moderate to high

Activity: 3 minutes

Reps: 4-6

Rest: 30 seconds between reps

Coaching Points:

-close control

-use all surfaces of the foot

-keep your head up and use periheral vision

-Beat the defender, accelerate into open space.

-balance when keeping thee ball, agility when moving and turning quickly.

1 v 1 - Transitions (20 mins)

Set up:

-As shown in the diagram - 15 x 20 yard area

Activity:

- 1 v 1

- Attacker dribbles at the defender, performs an attacking move and attempts to score in one of the two goals.

-If defender wins the ball they dribble to the end line.

-Keep rotating positions each rep.

Dosage:

Intensity: High

Duration: 15-45 seconds per rep

Reps: 6-10

Sets: 2

Rest: 15-45 seconds between rep. 1 minute between set.

Coaching Points:

-Aim - use your upper body to defend the ball - can you put your opponents off balance.

-close control

-short opposite movements to create a yard of space.

-use your body to protect the ball and beat the defender

-Balance and strength, be able to hold the defender off the ball

-identify the space and accelerate into it

Set Up

- as above

- 2 fields

- 2 v 2 + 2 on each field. (Neutral players in green)

Activity

-Play 2 v 2 on each field with 2 support players on the sides of the fields as shown.

-Team in possession can use either support player.

-Game is about decision making - do players make the pass or go 1 v 1.

Dosage:

Intensity: High

Duration per game: 3 minutes

Reps: 4-6

Rest: 1 minute between games

Coaching Points:

- encourage 1 v 1 dribbling and moves

-Can players beat their opponent 1 v 1 then look to make the pass or score.

-Balance and Strength to beable to hold off your defender.

-Be prepared to play under pressure

-decision making do they pass or dribble?

- Less coaching, let them play.
