Warm Up (10 mins)

Organization:

4 cones to create rectangle

5 yards long x 3 yards wide

1 soccer ball

2 players

Instructions:

Players set up their own area - as players arrive early they can be playing straight away

Burgundy player (attacker) is trying to cross the end line of the rectangle to score a point

If Yellow player (defender) can keep up with attacker and cross line at same time, they win a point

Attacker is trying to lose the defender to cross before they can catch up

Defender is not stealing the ball, just shadowing the attackers movement

Switch positions after set time or number of attempts

Coaching:

Use of body as disguise

Quick movement to score point

Keep the ball close, cannot cross the line without the ball

Ask what the score is - create a competitive environment

What do players do when pressured?

Are players turning into pressure instead of away, to protect the ball?

Do players recognize space in front and take advantage of it?

Technical Repetition (15 mins)

Organization:

Split 30x20 yard field into 4 channels

Each player has a ball

Instructions:

Players dribble ball through center of channel

When player reaches middle, they perform a stop-tap

When player reaches the end, they perform a U-turn

After U-turn, make eye contact with next player in line

Next player begins dribbling, starting player dribbles straight back to start

Coaching:

How to do a stop-tap:

- reach out for ball with dribbling foot and place on top of ball

- hop on back foot into the ball, pushing it forward

- land on front foot, continue to dribble forward

Body position - twist hips during hopping, adds disguise

Acceleration after landing - defender should be off balance, take advantage and get away

How to do a U-turn:

- it is not a pullback!

- Using right foot, place foot on top of ball

- drag the ball back towards left foot

- hop left foot out of the way

- allow ball to roll away
