Warm Up - Coerver Turns to find space (20 mins)

Coerver Turns

Activity 1 Setup: In groups of 3s, each player with a ball, 1st player dribbles 10 yards out and performs specified turn and then gets through gate as fast as possible. Next player ensues and goes through opposite gate. Coerver Turns to perform: Inside/Outside Chop, Stepover, Step On, Cryuff, Emerson

Coaching Points: Quality of moves, change of pace after. Be aware where you need to go and turn towards the correct gate

Acitvity 2 Set Up: In groups of 5s, 2nd player passes through legs of 1st, then becomes defender. 1st player gets ball and tries to perform turn and get to either gate.

Coaching Points: Same as activity 1. Position of defender dictates direction to turn. Be aware of defenders position. Immediate change of pace after turn.

1v1 Line Soccer for Individual Defenders (20 mins)

Set Up: 10x15 play area. In pairs, play 1v1 where a goal is scored by stopping the ball on the opposite endline. Game starts by pass from opposing player, player tries to win the ball back and get to endline for a goal as quickly as possible

Coaching Points: Close down quickly, but under control. Slow down at proper distance. Bend run to make the play predictable. Poke tackle or block tackle when appropriate. Get to goal as soon as you win the ball back.

Progressions: Start game with a throw in or lofted pass.

2v2 Pressure Cover Defense (20 mins)

Set Up: Play 2v2 games. Game starts with pass from opposing team. Then, the nearest player applies pressure to the player on the ball and his team mate stacks in (like a ladder from the goal to the ball) and moves to a cover position and the pair try to win the ball back and score.

Coaching Points: 1st defender is nearest the ball. 2nd defender is cover. Roles can change (if you are not pressuring defender - then you are the covering defender). Why do we pressure? Why do we cover the pressuring defender?

Progression: Teams receiving the ball at the start must complete a pass before scoring (to switch the defenders roles)

2v2 Transition Game (20 mins)

Organization: Tranisition Game 2v2. Play begins and if a team scores (or shoots and misses) they immediately become defenders, and a new ball is brought on by next opponents. Players who are out grab another ball and wait to enter game.

Coaching Points: Quick to score then recover quickly to pressure. 2nd defender needs to quickly get in a cover position. Can we stop the quick attack and win the ball and convert it to a goal?

Note: This is an extremely fast paced game and can be played with as many as 10-12 players
