Defensive Fencing (body shape) (10 mins)

Organization:

20x30 yard boxes divided into 6 10x10 squares

2 players per square

Instructions:

- Players must attempt to touch opponents front knee.

- 30 seconds per game.

- Winner earns 3pt and moves clockwise to next box; loser earns 1pt and stays where they are. In the event of a draw players "rock, paper, sscissors" to see who wins.

Coaching Points:

- Be on the balls of your feet/toes ready to quickly adjust or change direction.

- Knees bent slightly lowering centre of gravity.

- Try to match opposite players knee before engaging.

Applying Pressure (15 mins)

Organisation:

- With players already paired up, each pair gets a ball.

Instructions:

- Players work in groups of two.

- Passing ball back and forth.

- On the fifth pass the player making that pass (defender) applies pressure to the other (attacker).

- The player making the first pass will start pressing other player.

- Return

Coaching Points:

- Speed of approach.

- Angle of approach - deny penetration as you pressure.

- Body Position - slightly side on to the ball (force attacker where you want them to go).

- Slow down on approach.

Progressions:

- Attackers will start to attack as the coach observes the positioning and adjustments the defenders make to the movements of the ball.

1V1 to zone (10 mins)

Organization:

- 30x20 yard area

- Each player has a ball

Instructions:

- Players in possession of the ball dribbles towards opposing player with the intention of going pass and reaching the other side.

- These players must perform the inside cut or feint move and scissors from previous weeks to get pass the defending player.

- Every attempt should be applauded just as much as a succssful move.

- Whether or not the move was successful, the players switch sides, making it possible for each player to have sufficient practice.

Coaching Points:

- Positive 1st touch (drive at defender, makes it easier to unbalance defender)

- Smaller touches on the ball (use of pinky toe to dribble the ball) “Like Messi” as approaching defender

- Unbalance defender with body movement (Use of body to sell the fake)

- Timing the execution of the move based upon space between you and the defender

- Final touch of move bigger (allows head to come up)

- Quality of end Product.

Progressions:

- Each successful move gets the attacking player 1 points.

- After 30 seconds players move to the next cone in a clockwise direction. This allows the players to go against different types of defenders.

1v1 to goal (20 mins)

Organization:

- 10x20 yard grids with PUGG goal at the end

Instructions:

- 4 teams with even players

- Attacking players go one at a time at defender, with the intention of scoring in pugg goal. Play until goal is scored or ball goes out.

- Next player goes. Quick transitioning activity.

- Defending team stays for 1 minute.

Coaching Points:

-Head Up

-Attack Defender at speed

-Execution of moves

Progressions:

-Pass from defender to attacker creating a 1v1 situation for players to practice moves learned earlier under a little more pressure.

-Conditioned game 3 goal game 1v1 man to man game

-3v3 free play

- Looking out for and applauding the proper defensive approaches when executed or at least attempted.

- Attempts are to be applauded just as much as executions.

- Enthusiasm and encouragement of players to have a high intensity scrimmage.
