Description

Part one of a session looking at when the back 4 should press and drop. A shadow exercise to understand position in relation to the ball.

Progression 1 will allow the attackers to move forward and backwards with the ball, introducing the concept of when to pressure the ball.

Progression 2 adds a pressure player.

Set up - Place 4 cones as shown and position players on them. Spend 20min on exercise. Swap RED and BLUE players so each get the understanding of their position in relation to the ball.

To begin with this is a shadowing exercise. We are looking at how the back 4 react to the position of the ball.

Important to for the CB's to have control of the defence and all to understand the words of command - PUSH, SQUEEZE, DROP, SLIDE

The ball starts with the RED AM. He moves it to one of the other players. When the ball goes to the wide players the defence should shuffle across to the wide area.

Here the RB will go to pressure the ball, both CB's will close in and the LB will tuck in.

Notes: Will the RB show the player in inside or out? If the defence has moved across then do we show him into the defence line? If the defence are not organised then show him outside.

As the ball is played back to the RED CB the defence should push out. The players should look to regain the back 4 position higher up the pitch. The GK should also adjust his position to act as a sweeper.

Again, just in relation to the ball, how will the defence react to a forward pass? If the pass is not pressured (which will not happen here) they should drop off as the ball is played forward.

The two FBs should drop and tuck in to the edges of the 18 yard area, the CBs either side of the penelty spot on the 18 yard area. The GK should re-adjust his position. As the ball is passed again the defence should adjust. A back pass to RED CB then push out, pass to the RED LW/RW adjust position.

Progression 1. RED players are now allowed to advance or retreat with the ball 5-10 yards. Start position will be from RED AM. Still shadow play.

Now if RED AM was to turn and advance at the defence, the CB's would have to decide where the line would be that they apply pressure to the ball. Here look at both the pressure on the ball and the cover of the other defenders. If he retreates then the defence should squeeze up, looking to put pressure on any bad touch etc.

If he

The ball has been passed from the start position to the RED LW. As he advances the BLUE RB should bend a run to put pressure on the ball. The CB's, LB and GK all re-adjust their positions. If he retreats then the defence should look to push out as per picture 2, but in a straighter line

If the ball goes to the RED CB then as normal the defence would push out. If the RED CB advances the defence would drop off (there is no pressure on the ball), if he retreats then the defence & GK would continue to push out (depending on how the team play)

Progression 2 - Now the idea is to look at if there is "effective" pressure on the player with the ball, the defence can look to squeeze. If there is now pressure on the ball the defence will look to drop in order to compact the space. The CB's needs to understand at what point the dropping off stops and they have to apply pressure to the ball. Players can now intercept the ball. If the ball is intercepted then it should be played to the RED CB to play to the RED CM to start again.

Other point - If the pass is bad or the receiving player has a bad touch, then pressure can be applied.

In this example the ball is played from the RED LW to the RW. The BLUE pressure player can not cover the area and apply effective pressure so the defence has to re-adjust. Here the BLUE LB looks to move out and stop the RED RW from advancing. THE two CB's & RB should drop back in covering positions and the GK should re-adjust his position.

The BLUE pressure player should look to take up a position to stop any pass back into RED CM.
