Ladder Juggling (10 mins)

Ladder Juggling

•Have the group get into groups of 3 with 1 ball for the group.

•1 player has the ball while the other 2 are one behind the other and facing the player with the ball

•The ball is tossed to the player facing and has to be sent back to the thrower with the laces. If the player catches the ball without it hitting the ground then they get a point. The player who did the kick follows and takes the ball. The thrower goes behind the non active player and the rotation continues.

•This goes for 1 minute and the group with the most points wins. Have the winning group go to the “top of the ladder” and descend based on their scores with some form of exercise for each rung of the ladder below the winner.

•Do another juggling skill for 1 minute and continue the process. Players can be asked to control with thigh and send back with laces, control with chest back pass back, send it back straight with the head and any combination of those that the coach would like to try.

Kentucky (20 mins)

Kentucky

As many players as you want can join in this one. Space should be about 30 x 30 but can obvioussly be adjusted based on need.

Start with 3 players doing a weave.

1 passes to 2 and does an overlap, 2 passes to 3 and does an overlap. 3 receives the pass and moves in on the keeper for a 1 on 1. 1 and 2 will receive passes from 4 and 5 respectively and take a 1 time shot. This all needs to be timed well or the poor keeper won't have a chance.

Once the 3 have taken their shots, the person who dribbled at the keeper gets his ball and passes to either 4 or 5 and starts a new weaving sequence where they will attack the other net and continue this movement for as long as you like.

Coaching points

Same as the 3 man weave for the beginning so see that drill for those ones.

For the dribble on the keeper, approach the keeper with speed to force the keeper into a poor choice.

For the 2 shooters, I like to say to them that it is a 1 time power shot from outside the 18 but if you have a younger age, you can adjust to 2 touches if you need.

Variations

You can certainly vary the delivery of the 1 time passes

You can add in a defender to make the dribble a 1 vs 1 before they get to the keeper (this can be tricky as it can mess with the timing of getting the shots off)

penalty area with goal, as illustrated.

• 12 players (incl. GK), working in 3 groups of

3 Attackers plus 2 Servers.

• Supply of balls with A’s & with S’s.

• Practice starts with: A1 touches ball past cone to shoot from

distance in central area.

• A1 then assists A2 with a wall-pass for A2 to shoot

at goal from an angle.

• After assisting A2: A1 overlaps S1 cone to

receive a pass from S on corner of penalty area, to supply A2 & A3,

moving into scoring positions from outside area.

Detail

• Employ power & placement skills when striking on goal.

• Observe position & movement of GK before deciding technique to

strike at goal.

• Concentrate on excellent technique: body position/shape,

footwork, arriving into position/timing

of movement.

• Clean contact on ball with a chosen part of body or foot surface.

• Movements & interchanges of A’s should co-ordinate to cover

major goal-scoring areas within penalty area.

• Simple progression for this practice is:

- Position D on edge of penalty area to defend cross from A1 &

block shots from A2.

Key coaching points

• Strike with power & accuracy from a distance.

• Keep ball low when striking at goal.

Practice organisation

• Half pitch with full goal, as illustrated.

• 9 players (incl. GK), working as 5 Attackers, 1 Defender & 2 Servers.

• Supply of balls with S on edge of centre circle inside attacking half.

• Practice starts with: S1 feeds A1, who is 10yds

ahead of centre circle.

• A1 plays into D, 10yds ahead, who in turn, lays-off a pass for A2, to

shoot from distance in a central position.

• As soon as A2 shoots: S2 feeds A3, who plays

forward to A4 & overlaps to cross for A1 & A2, attacking penalty

area defended by D, who has recovered from earlier position.

• Once outcome of cross & finish is concluded:

A5 plays one touch & then serves ball into penalty area for 3A’s (A1,

A2, A3) v D.

Detail

• Continuous place-changing by A1 & A2, as they attack penalty area

& await arrival of crosses.

• Attempt to observe position of GK & progress of recovering D, prior

to positioning to strike at goal.

• Making early decision on technique to be used to strike & focusing

on precision of contact in execution.

• Movements & interchanges of A’s should co-ordinate to cover

major goal-scoring areas within penalty box.

• Simple progressions for this practice are:

- S becomes 2nd recovering D, moving into penalty area.

- A5 varies nature of service (taking ball to end line

& pulling cross back etc).

Key coaching points

compact body position, using power technique.

• Co-ordination of movement into penalty area

score from secondary cross.

• Communication between A’s whilst approaching

& within penalty area.

King Louis

2 teams in 2 18 yard box's attached. Play 5 vs 2 with the 5 having 2 touches max and the 2 having unlimitted. The 5 cannot cross into the other grid, nor can the 2. No goalie but players can go in the net and stop the shots without their hands.

Goal is to create scoring chances from the 18 with combination plays either with each other or going to their strikers to get set passes. They can of course look to play their strikers in for opportunities as well.

Coaching Points

spacing depth and width in the 18 to keep possession and set up lanes to shoot

speed of play

communication for set passes
