Full team, possession with purpose (20 mins)

Organization:

60x40 area, (Make smaller if less numbers), Place several balls around area, players into two teams, one in pinnies, set up as shown. (This is following a dynamic warm up)

Instructions:

Teams compete for the ball and look to work it to one of two target players, once they reach one target they must create angles of support to get ball back from target and work to get ball back to diagonally opposite target player. Each time they achieve this they get a point. If ball goes out at the side,pass the ball back in. play at game pace.

Coaching Points:

First touch;

Quality passes;

Support and movement off the ball;

Communication.

Progressions:

Target player must play a ball straight to another player before getting it back to earn a point;

Limit touches;

When ball passed to target, passing player must switch with target.

4v1 Passing square (20 mins)

Organization:

10x10/12x12 area; Five players play 4v1; one ball

Instructions:

Four attackers keep possession outside the box, point for 5 consecutive passes.

Defender cannot come outside the box but tries to close down the passer and cut off their pass. (1 point for each interception)

Attackers need to create good supporting angles to give passer options. (Think ahead!)

Coaching Points:

Quality passes;

Control and first touch;

Supporting angles;

Disguise.

Progressions:

Put two defenders in the area;

Limit touches individually with attacking players and /or with all players;

If pass is intercepted, passer swaps with defender straight away.

'Break in' overload game (20 mins)

Organization:

40x40 area; Play 6v4 in favour of the attackers; build a 10 yard circle or 10x10 diamond; 1 ball with spares outside the area.

Instructions:

No one is allowed in the circle except when one attacker can dribble through with the ball for which they get a point, they can also score by making 4-5 passes consecutively.

defenders score by winning the ball and dribbling out the area. Rotate players regularly.

Coaching Points:

Create space;

Positive dribbling;

Quality, crisp passing;

support and movement off the ball;

Communication

Progressions:

Make game equal numbers, 6v6/5v5.

limit touches to one and/or two.

Overload game Part 2 (30 mins)

Organization: As before

Coaching Points: As before

Progressions:

Have attacking player stationed in the middle as a link player - 1 point for each received pass;

An attacking player 'meets' the ball in the circle, cannot stay in there though;

Use a goalkeeper to handle and distribute the ball from the middle.

Return to Targets/Transition game or play Defense v Offense in half field. Start with overload in favour of attackers.
