Warmup (10 mins)

Organization: Players each have a ball within 15x25yd grid.

Instructions: Players must find space in grid - leave ball stationary while moving about the grid (using various dynamic movements). On command, players approach the ball and stop in front of it in a defensive manner.

Coaching Points:

Speed of approach - fast then slow

Angle of approach - bent (banana) run

Positioning - sideways on, in front of/to side of ball

Body low, knees bent, on toes

Progressions:

Stop in front of ball

Stop then touch ball

Stop, touch, then jockey backward

Have players dribble ball, find new space between each progression

Semi-Opposed (10 mins)

Organization:

15-25yd grid

Each player has partner with one ball - line up on one side of grid

Instructions:

Player with ball dribble across the grid, player without ball jockeys backward as defender

Coaching Points:

Distance/angle from the ball - close enough to poke it, far enough not to get beat - forcing to one side

Quckness of feet/shuffling technique

Timing of tackle

Tackle with front foot

Progressions:

Straight dribbling

Dribbling with change of direction - left to right

Attacker makes long touch - defender tackles

Increase speed if needed

Organization:

15x10 grids with ~2yd end zone on one end, mini goal on other end

Instructions: Player on the end with the zone play to opposite player, then defend the zone - counter to goal if stolen in bounds

Switch lines

Coaching Points:

Speed of approach

Patience - wait for bad/long touch (timing of tackle)

Angle of approach - bend run - cut off the zone

Tackle with front foot

Body positioning/technique

Progressions:

Switch grids - to approach from opposite angles

Players split evenly onto 2 team - one team on each end

Instructions:

Coach playes to one team

Opposite team defends

Coaching Points:

Angle of approach - bend run - cut off the goal or force out of bounds

Tackle with front foot
