Pre-scan (10 mins)

Essence:

Players have to pre-scan to know where their next pass should go

Structure:

If groups of 4 or 6 then just add 1 extra player round the outside or take 1 off

3 of the 4 players round the outside have a ball, one player doesn't (Player D to begin with)

Player E signal to receive from any player that has a ball

Player E needs to pre-scan as they must play the ball they receive to whichever player doesn't have a ball

Player E then signals to receive from a different player and repeats the above

Rotate players round every minute

Pointers:

After pre-scanning Player E makes sure there first touch allows their 2nd touch to be a pass straight to the next player

Player E takes lots of short little steps to keep balanced, have a good first touch and to allow them to player 2 touch Hockey

Players round the outside pass in instantly when player E shows to receive to keep the intensity up on the drill and work player E really hard

Variations:

- If too difficult to begin with, change so each player round the outside has a ball, and player E receives and passes back to the same player

- Players round the outside can communicate to player E initially to help and guide them where the pass should go

+ vary the pass in - sometimes to reverse, sometimes little lifted pass.

Pre-scan receive and shot (15 mins)

Essence:

Players have to pre-scan before receiving in order to select the right pass

Structure:

Pile of balls start with Player A and Player B (Player A starts first drill, then B the second and alternate)

Player A plays a ball to player C

Player D makes a lead to go either left or right round the outside of the cones

Player C has to pre-scan to know which direction D has moved, in order to get the pass to them quickly.

Player D receives and shoots at goal.

Players E & F are there incase player D mistraps or misses the ball. If they do then they receive the ball and pass back to player D who then shoots.

E & F both go in for tip ins as D shoots and all 3 player the rebounds out.

Rotations

Players follow their pass, and player D takes the spot of either E or F, and E or F joins A or B.

Pointers:

Player C has good body position to make the pre scan easy (feet facing fowards)

Player D receives in flow in front of body so they can get head up and get a good quick and effective shot off.

Players D, E & F all stay on their toes for rebounds to get into good habits

Variations:

+ Increase passing distances

+ Add defender in to mark Player D

3v3 Att Vs Def (15 mins)

Essence:

Attack Vs Defence 3v3

Structure:

Same set up as previous drill but remove cones for attackers.

This time the 3 forwards in the D are marked by 3 defenders.

A passes to C as before, and C then passes in to any of the 3 attackers who have to lead to find space and offer a pass

The attack is played out then give players time to re-set and start again.

When defenders win the ball they have to pass back to A,B or C, to encourage them to clear the ball early and for forwards to work to win the ball back when they lose it straight away.

Pointers:

C ensures they continue to pre-scan

D,E & F time their leads and move off each other (don't all lead to the same place)

Variations:

+/- Add or reduce the amount of attackers or defenders (A,B or C could join in to overload attack or to act as a jumping back defender).

Matchplay (30 mins)

- Encourage pre-scanning and good first touch throughout the matches.

- Add in the rule that 5 completed passes = 1 goal if needed, to encourage the above in order to work the ball out of a press.

- Assign a leader for each line (Defence, Mid, Forwards) who is in charge of communicating and organising their line.

- Encourage players to scan when the ball is not around them as well to ensure they keep themselves in the correct and most effective position both defensively and attackingly.
