Warm Up (15 mins)

Using 1/3 of a field; Two lines of players; 1-high (A) and the other wide (B) with 1-player from B by the central cone..

 Shot 1; Striker Shot: Player A passes to Player B by the cone. Player B turns with his 1st touch and shoots with his 2nd touch. Players switch lines.

Shot 2; Midfielder Shot: Player A passes to Player B by the cone. Player A 'sets' the ball with his 1st touch, turns and runs to goal. Player B attacks the ball and shoots 1st time. Player A is looking for rebounds. Players switch lines.

Shot 3; In-Behind Shot: Player A passes to Player B by the cone. Player A 'sets' the ball with his 1st touch, turns and runs to goal. Player B attacks the ball and passes back to Player A who is 1v1 with the goalkeeper.

 Coaching Points

1) Set Up: Are the players on their toes? Firm pass to feet? 'Turn the corner' with 1st touch? Can he strike the ball without another set up touch OR too far away? Is the lay off good? Does it allow the midfielder to attack the ball?

2) Preparation: How is head check? Balanced? Head up to see where the GK is? Look at the ball before striking itl? Does the midfielder line his body up with the ball & the goal? Is the G & G realistic?

3) Technique: Is it accurate? Is it to the corners? Is it with inside foot (1) or laces (2)? Is the shot weighted right? IE, Accuracy v Power determined by distance. What percentage of shots need saving?

Activity One (20 mins)

Using Penalty area of a field; 2-lines of defenders (B) and 2-lines of attackers (A) with attacking wide midfielders (C). Wide midfielders cannot shoot. Rotate attackers/defenders/W Midfielders every 4-min

 i) 3 v 2 + 2 (5v2). Coach plays in a ball into the penalty area. 3 attackers + 2-wide midfielders try to get shot off on goal.

ii) 4 v 3 + 2 (6v3). Same set up as above.

iii) 5 v 4 + 2 (7v4). Same set up as above.

 Coaching Points

1) Willingness to shoot: Do players look for every opportunity to shoot? Are they only looking to shoot with fav foot? Are their heads up and making the right decision?

2) Movement off the ball: Are supporting players standing still and watching? OR moving to create space, move defenders or look for rebounds?

3) Deadliness: When presented with a scoring chance, are players lethal? Do they force GK's into unbelievable saves? Do they take the shots early before GK is set?

Activity Two (20 mins)

Using a 1/2 field, with 2-counter goals on the halfway line; Play 6 v 6 Phase of Play.

Rotate attacking/defending teams every 8-10 minutes

 i) Blue team (attackers) start with the ball and attacks the white team (Defenders). Blue team objective, shoot/score on goal, while the white team defend the goal.

i) Scoring; Attackers:- shot on goal = 1pt, goal = 3pts. Defenders:- pass through counter goal = 1pt, dribble through counter goals = 3pts.

 Coaching Points

1) Realism: Are players attacking like a real game? IE, Principles of attack,

2) Creativity: Are players looking, moving, thinking and trying to be creative? Are they winning their 1 on 1 match ups?

3) Shots Taken: Are shooting chances seen? Are they taken early? Correct technique? Do they test the GK? Rebounds?

Final Game (15 mins)

50yd x 44yd field; Play 6 v 6 to age appropriate goals.

Formation: 1 - 1 - 2 - 2

Formation Emphasis: With 2-Wide Midfielders and 2-Forwards, there should be plenty of shooting chances.
