Ball Mastery

Aim: Improve player’s ability to manipulate the movement of a ball.

Drill: Each player has a ball inside the square. Player’s begin by dribbling around the grid using different parts of both of their feet. The coach can change to the conditions e.g. only right foot, or only inside of foot.

Coaches teach players different skills to work on e.g. toe taps, inside taps, V’s, triangles.

Key Points: Focus on correct technique before speed. Work on getting the movements correct at walking speed before increasing to a jog.

Encourage players to get as many touches on the ball as they can.

The aim of this activity is to make players comfortable on the ball so that they feel confident in any situation.

1 v 1 Attack and Defence

Aim: Increase the ability and confidence in a 1 v 1 situation.

Drill: Players are spread evenly on the four corner cones. The drill begins with player A playing a pass to player B. Player A makes a run around the middle cone at the same time as player B plays a pass to player A at the middle cone. As the second pass is made player D makes a run around the middle cone and defends player A once they receive the second pass.

The drill is then repeated on the other side with player C starting it.

Key Points: Encourage players to use change of direction (step-overs, fakes) to get round the defender.

Emphasise that change of pace can be used to beat the defender.

Ensure weight of pass is correct so that the focus can remain on the 1 v 1’s.

1 v 1 Game Situation

Aim: Continue to develop 1 v 1 skills in game like situation.

Drill: Two teams of 4 players each. The game starts in grid A with the bib team in possession and one non bib defender (4 v 1). The 3 other bib players position themselves as shown (one between the goals and the other 2 at the shooting line cones).

The bib team must get a player running with the ball across the halfway line into grid B and score in one of the goals (inside the scoring zone).

At the moment the bib player crosses the halfway line one of the non-bib player enters the grid to attack the orange player (1 v 1).

Which defender commits depends on the ‘gate’ through which the attacker enters

grid B.

Key Focus: Encourage player to drive with the ball once they are through 1 v 1
