Defending as a unit (3v3) skill (15 mins)

Description - 30x20 yard grid. 3v3. Reds are trying to get past the blues. If blues win possession they attack the opposite line. If you stop the ball on the opposite line, that team get a point.

Technical

- Defending individual skills 1v1 (get there quick, touch tight, side on), can you stop attackers turning, defending as a unit

Tactical

- which way to show attackers (depends which 3rd you are in), pressure player in possession, cover and support of other defenders

- speed, balance, agility, strength (to tackle attackers)

Best Practice Technique (25 mins)

2 balls moving simultaneously. Play starts by the first player coming short as if to receive (2). The player in possession (1) inores him and plays the furthest player (3). Who sets back to player (2) he then plays into player (4). Player (1) after playing the 1st pass sets off on a over-lapping/support run and receives off player (4) player (1) then plays back to (4) who plays across the square and starts the sequence off again.

Defending as a unit (25 mins)

Description Attacking and combination play and defending as a unit

Detail 4 blues attack reds. Only 2 blues allowed in final area. reds must stay in their own area. Blues play to a finish. If reds win ball attack through end cones.

SSG - Defending in the different 3rds of the pitch (25 mins)

Description

- 7v7, formation 1,2,3,1. Split into 3 grids (defensive 3rd, middle 3rd & attacking 3rd). Must stay in grid although if ball is played upto an attacker, 1 of the midfield players can support and join them in that 3rd to make 2v2.

Progressions

a) can move 1 grid (if playing in defensive 3rd, can move to middle 3rd but only when your team are in possession)

b) can move 1 grid (if playing in attacking 3rd, can move to middle 3rd either when team in possession or not)

c) normal game play
