Warm-up (10 mins)

Organization:

-30 x 30 yard area set up as shown

-12 players (6 Attackers, 6 Defenders) set up as shown

-1 ball per group

Instructions:

1. Attacking players dribble from the top of the area to the bottom

2. The defending player moves sideways on defensive position as

they move back, but do not attempt to win the ball

3. The defending player must always stay ahead of the ball

4. The defending player must change their body shape as the

attacking player moves the ball

5. Once the players reach the bottom of the area they switch roles

and repeat in the opposite direction

Coaching Points:

1. Attack the front foot of the defending player

2. Use fakes and feints in order to make the defender switch their

stance

3. Go at speed once the body is warmed up and ready to play

Progressions:

P – Attacking player now looks to get in behind the defending player at speed

P – Defending player can now tackle for the ball

R – Take away the defending player

R – Increase the width and length to 40 x 40 to provide players more space to move into

Main-Theme (20 mins)

Organization:

-Open area set up as shown

-Cones are set up as a triangle in a 5 x 5 x 5 yard area, set up as shown

-2 players (1 Attacker, 1 Defender) set up as shown

-1 ball

Instructions:

1.Attacking player starts with the ball and attempts to dribble through the triangle with the ball

2.The defending player attempts to protect the triangle, deny penetration and win the ball

3.Attacking player has five attempts and then the players switch roles

Coaching Points:

1.Commit defender

2.Play at speed

3.Attack the front foot of the defender

4.Execution of fake and feints

5.Shield the ball and posses when playing with your back to the target area

Progressions:

P – Allow the defending player to score if the ball is won to introduce transition

R – Increase the space of the target area to 10 x 10 x 10 yards

Main-Theme(2) (20 mins)

Organization:

-20 x 15 yard area set up as shown

-4 players (1Attacker, 1Defender active and 1 attacker, 1 defender resting) set up as shown

-1 ball

Instructions:

1.Defending player starts with the ball

2.Defending player passes to the attacking player

3.The attacking player moves out to receive the ball and attempts to beat the defender over their end line

4.Defending player becomes active on the attacker’s first touch and attempts to win the ball

5.Players go to the end of the line after each attempt

6.Award points for successful attempts and keep score

Coaching Points:

1.Commit defender

2.Playatspeed

3.Attack the front foot of the defender

4.Execution of fake and feints

5.Cut in the space behind the defender – close the door

Progressions:

P – If the defender wins the ball they now can score by dribbling over the attacker’s end line

P – Defending players now become active on their pass

R – Allow attackers a second touch before defender is active

R – Have attackers start with the ball

Conditioned Game (20 mins)

Organization:

1.40 x 30 yard area set up as shown

2.12 players (Teams of 4, 1 team resting) set up as shown 3.Supply of balls by coach at half-way line

Instructions:

1.Coach starts game by serving to player who has positioned himself best to make a penetrating dribble

2.Teams score by dribbling through either wide gate, worth 1 point (see A and C), or central gate, worth 2 points (see B)

3.If ball goes out, coach restarts with a pass to the team who did not concede possession

4.If goal is scored, conceding team restarts with a dribble or kick in from their back line

5.First team to 4 points wins, with losing team being replaced by resting team

Coaching Points:

1.Controlled approach

2.Engage Defender at speed by attacking front foot

3.Timing of Move – just outside tackling radius

4.Change of speed and direction

5.Cut into the space behind defender

6.Head up, accelerate away

Progressions:

P – Wide gates are removed, and only the central gates score points R – Increase to a 50 x30 area

R – Restart with kick-ins, and make first touch free for attacking team
