2 v 2 Defending Focus (15 mins)

Set Up:

15-20 x 10-15 Grid with small goals. In groups of 4.

How it Works:

Coach will demonstrate pressure and cover and then players will try it against passive attackers. Alternate roles. Attackers will move ball and defense will react with pressure and cover.

Progression:

Teams are now trying to score and defenders can only take ball by intercepting, taking it off a bad touch, or if the opponent tries to go past them. The defenders cannot steal the ball off the attackers while they have control and are not penetrating.

Keys:

1. Close quickly 2. Show Restraint 3. Deny 4. Dictate 5.Delay 6. Depth and balance.

Defenders cover by going on an angle behind player who pressures. This is to help protect the teammate/middle of field and to be in a position to pressure ball if it is switched.

It is also important for the players to communicate verbally and non verbally.

3 v 2 Defending Focus (25 mins)

Set up:

Grid is 25-30 X 15-20. Balls are in middle with coach. Defenders begin on the sides and step in when ball is played..

How It Works:

Coach will explain the concept and show the shape of the defenders before players attempt.

Coach passes into any of 3 attackers and 3 attackers come out to play against 2 defenders. The blue are trying to dribble over the far line with control. After each sequence, new defenders come out.

With older groups, can play offsides.

As we progress, we will encourage attacking teams to do overlaps and other creative movement so we can test the defense.

Keys:

1. Close quickly 2. Show Restraint 3. Deny 4. Dictate 5.Delay 6. Depth and balance.

Try to make the 3 v 2, a 2 v 2 by taking away an option.

It is also important for the players to communicate verbally and non verbally.

3 v 2 + 1 Transition (20 mins)

Set up:

Grid is 25-30 X 15-20 with goals on each end. Balls are with teams behind goal.

How It Works:

Blue team comes out with a 3 v 2, after play is done (ball goes out, ball loss, or shot), blue team defends and 3 red players come out to attack against blue. The furthest forward blue player has to touch the opponent's post before they can come back an defend.

Players should alternate lines after each play.

Keys:

1. Close quickly 2. Show Restraint 3. Deny 4. Dictate 5.Delay 6. Depth and balance.

7. Recovery run helps dictate the pressure on ball.

Try to make the 3 v 2, a 2 v 2 by taking away an option.

It is also important for the players to communicate verbally and non verbally.

Game With Focus On Defending (15 mins)

Set Up:

25-35 x 15-20 Grid with goals (either open or with goalkeepers). 4 v 4 in grid.

How It Works:

Teams are divided (king's court if more than 8 players). A normal scrimmage with restrictions on defenders. After a team finishes attacking or loses the ball, the 2 highest players have to touch the sideline before they can defend.

Keys (General: Delay, Support (Width/Depth), Compactness, Cover/Balance, Control/Restraint

Surprise):

1. Close quickly 2. Show Restraint 3. Deny 4. Dictate 5.Delay 6. Depth and balance.

7. Recovery run helps dictate the pressure on ball.

Try to make the 3 v 2, a 2 v 2 by taking away an option.

It is also important for the players to communicate verbally and non verbally.
