knee tag (10 mins)

Organization:

Each player partners up. In a side on defensive stance they attempt to tag each others knee without being tagged themselves.

Instructions:

Each player tries to tag the knee of their opponent. They can ony dodge an attack by switching their stance. (from left foot forward to right foot forward.) you achieve 1 point per tag. first to 3 wins the round. 2 rounds per game then switch partners.

Coaching Points:

Knees bent. Good side on approach. Low center of gravity. On your toes not your heels.

Progressions:

You can only dodge an attack by moving forwards and backwards.

closing down attacker (10 mins)

Organization:

In same pair we will practice closing down your defender quickly and appropriately.

Instructions:

you will pass the ball back and forth between you and your partner. On the third pass you will close down your defender as quickly as possible. then retreat to starting position and repeat with other partner.

Coaching Points:

Take long strides then shorten them as you approach player with ball. Arrive side on in order to force attacker in desired direction. Can we change our apprach so that we're side on but on the outside shoulder?

Progressions:

The player reciving the ball now turns with the ball as they recieve it. this is allows the defender to get to the attacker as quick as posible not allowing them to turn.

1v1 poke tackle intro (15 mins)

Organization:

Players go 1v1 with the attacker attempting to dribble through the triangles to gain a point.

Instructions:

Just as in the first drill players pass back and forth (defender starts passing sequence) on the 3rd pass however the attacker attempts to dribble pass defender and through the triangle to obtain a point. If defender wins the ball they gain a piont. Both players reset then continue until time runs out. Game goes for 75 seconds then roles are switches. 3 rounds each time. Then change partner.

Coaching Points:

Approach to the ball. Side on to an outside shoulder. when is it appropiate to excute a tackle and when do i hold my ground. When back is turned can we close down the space immediately. Intro to poke tackle technique.

Progressions:

Break for instruction to poke tackle. This time if ball is won roles switch immediately with reseting to encourage quick transition. Same points apply.

Organization: 4v4 or 5v5 Scrimmage

Instructions: Free play

Coaching Points: Reinforce messi/ ronaldo touches as well as defensive techniques (side on approach, forcing them outside, approach to the outside shoulder.)
