2v2+1 Possession (15 mins)

2v2+1 Possession Game: 12 x 15 yard rectangle

Organization: Groups of 5 play 2v2 possession with a neutral player who always plays

with the team in possession.

Scoring: Teams score a point every time they make 5 consecutive passes.

Objectives: Players learn support, support angle, and when to hold on to the ball and

when to pass first time. Are they peeling off the defender or standing still? If defender follows the attacker can they make a run in behind?

Progressions:

1. Neutral player only has one touch. This teaches the players to quickly support the

neutral player.

2. Neutral player has unlimited touches, but all other players have only two touch

max. This teaches the neutral player to provide quick support and be constantly

involved and dictate the rhythm of play by holding the ball when appropriate and

playing and supporting when appropriate.

3. Play 3v3 plus neutral and neutral player cannot pass the ball back to the player

who passed it to him.

Passing & Receiving Peeling Off and Bending Runs (15 mins)

Warm-up: Peeling Off and Bending Runs

Groups of 8-10. Grid size 8 yards wide by 10-15 long. Distance from player 1 to 2 around 10-15 yds. Player 1 starts with a dribbling touch forward which is the cue for player 2 to make a peeling off run as shown in the diagram on the left above. As soon as player 2 gets wide with his/her body sideways on, player 1 passes the ball to him/her. Player 2 controls the ball forward with his/her first touch using his/her front foot and dribbles to the other end of the grid and passes to the first in line and goes to the back of the line. Both ends are going at the same time in a clockwise direction. Switch to counter clockwise direction after a while.

The progressions are shown on the diagram on the right. The top half shows the first progression, where player 2 makes a bending run for a through ball. The bottom half shows the second progression, where the two players do a combination of in-to-feet, back-and-through into a bending run.

This is another non-functional activity that is included since it is conducive for working on the principles of Peeling off and Bending runs.

Key coaching points: time runs to stay onside (cones are ‘last defender’). Open body to see forward and look over shoulder before getting ball. Peel off far enough away from cone to receive a pass to feet that cone ‘defender’ cannot intercept.

2v2 Pressure Cover (10 mins)

2v2 Small Group Defense Progression

1) Passive: have two players pass the ball back and forth. The other two defending work on staggered stance and forcing attacker wide. Other defender needs to provide cover in case the first defender were to get beat. attackers are not trying to beat defenders. They just hold on to the ball for 3-4 touches. Switch Roles.

2) Live: 2v2 dribble across the line.

Coaching Points: Where do we force them? Two principles small group defense: Communication, shape (pressure-cover)

Defending Back Four (10 mins)

Defending Back Three:

- On coaches command react to cone and have good P-C-B

- Progression

1. react to 3 cones and go back to start.

2. Now coaches can play ball through seams, make sure you don't let him!

Coaching Points: 1) individual defensive stance, 2) communication: force right or force left; I go ball, I got cover, etc. 3) Quick transition

Defending the dribble or the long ball

- If there's no pressure on the ball and you see the player put his head to hit the long ball, what do we do? (Yell side on and starting running back side on)

- if the player is dribbling with no pressure, the three backs do not break shape but keep dropping at the speed of dribbler.

11v11 Defensive Shape (10 mins)

General Principles in Defending:

Can do this activity with cones: introduce double down philosophy

- ATTITUDE!!!!

- Hunt the ball

- When you lose it, we win it back in 5 seconds

- Double down philosophy

- no shots on our goal, get pissed off when you give up a shot or a cross

- *If you can defend, you will play. (not if you're a defender, but if you can defend!)

Roles of Each Player in 11v11 when defending in offensive half:

*most teams will play a 4-3-3 with one holding mid

When opposing Team's Center back has Possession of the ball.

- One of our Forwards (#9) applies pressure and forces them wide

- the other forward #10 takes their holding mid

- the four mids stay compact until ball is played wide. why? We don't want other team playing through the seams and beating us centrally

- back four are also compact and making sure the distance between the #9 and #4&5 isn't more than 35 yards.

When opposing team's outside back has the ball:

- our closest OM #11, applies immediate pressure on the ball. the other three mids shift over to provide good cover and balance. opposite OM needs to stay compact. Spacing between each player cannot be more than 10 yards

- Outside back #3 on that side, needs to push up on their OM/OF.

- The other 3 backs need to slide over to provide good shape (P-C-B)

- Opposite OB can be slightly in front of the two center backs.

8 v 6+GK: Defensive Team Shape in Defensive Half with 1-4-4-2

Progress to 9 v 8+GK

Restarts. Keeper punts or throws ball to offensive team to start.

Can have extra players get shots off in between.

- 1 point if offensive team dribbles thru or passes through gates.

- 1 point if offensive team scores on big goal.

Progression: Add small goals at half field. And can add rest of players in game. One offensive player with defensive team and offensive team can have a 2-4-2 system.

Coaching Points: What are the cues for pushing up? When ball is cleared or backs are facing offensive goal.
