Warm Up (10 mins)

Organization:

1. 20 x 20 yard area set up as shown

2. 4 players (2 Teams of 2) set up as shown

3. 1 ball (Additional around the outside)

Instructions:

1. Players run out to the middle to press the ball

2. 1st defender closes down the ball

3. 2nd defender provides cover and support

4. The middle cone is there to indicate when 1st defender should slow down and get low

5. On the command of switch given by the covering player the defenders change roles

Coaching Points:

1. Speed and angle of approach should force attacker into cover

2. Angle and distance of 2nd defender

3. Ability to change roles quickly and correctly

Progression/Regression:

1. P – Position more than one ball in key defending areas – i.e. attacking third and have players close down into a number of different positions

2. R – Mark covering positions with cones if players are continually out of position

Main Theme (20 mins)

Organization:

1. Penalty area set up as shown

2. 12 players (5 Attackers, 6 Defenders, 1 Goalkeeper) set up as shown

3. 1 ball (Additional around the outside)

4. 4 Markers to indicate starting position

Instructions:

1. Defending players starts the activity with a diagonal pass to an attacking player between the markers

2. Two defenders then apply pressure starting next to the goal

3. The one attacker attempt, to beat the defenders to score on goal

4. If the defending players win the ball they attempt to pass to the coach who acts as a target between the counter goal

5. The process is the repeated with a pass being made from the next defender in line at the opposite side of the goal

6. Rotate players after set time interval

Coaching Points:

1. Deny penetration

2. Speed and angle of approach should force attacker into cover

3. Angle and distance of 2nd defender

4. Ability to change roles quickly and correctly

5. Correct moments to tackle or double team

6. Transition to attack

Progression/Regression:

1. P – Increase the starting distance for the attacker by 10 yards creating more space to defend

2. R – Change the starting position of defender to the edge of the six yard box to allow them to pressure quicker

Conditioned Game (15 mins)

Organization:

1. 40 x 25 yard area set up as shown

2. 12 players, set up as shown

3. 1 ball (Additional around the outside)

Instructions:

1. Teams play 2v1 in each half of the field as they attempt to score in their opponent’s goal

2. Players are restricted to playing and moving only within the zone

3. If the ball leaves the area normal restart rules apply (throw n-ins, corners, and goal kicks)

4. Rotate players after a set time interval

Coaching Points:

1. Deny penetration

2. Speed and angle of approach should force attacker into cover

3. Angle and distance of 2nd defender

4. Ability to change roles quickly and correctly

5. Correct moments to tackle or double team

6. Transition to attack

Progression/Regression:

1. P – Allow players from defensive zone to follow their pass into the attacking zone to make a 2v2

2. P – Remove zones and play 3v3 or 4v4
