Warm-Up (20 mins)

Organization:

-10-12 players

-Full quarter pitch with 4 squares of 7x7.

-Divide the players into 2 teams.

-16 cones, 5-6 bibs, 2 balls

**GKs with GK coach***

-To begin the session there must be either 1 or 2 players from each team in each of the 4 squares.

-The aim is to pass from square to square around the pitch. 1 team must play clockwise, the other anti-clockwise. Once a player has played his pass he must follow that pass. Players must receive the pass inside the square. Use a maximum of 2 touches if possible.

Progression/Variations:

-Start with players dribbling/using moves from box to box.

-Allow players to play with a bit more freedom. In other words they can come out of the square to receive and can play little combinations (one-twos) with teammates.

Skill Development:

-Weight of pass, passing accuracy, decision-making, communication.

Coaching Points

-Spatial Awareness, there is a lot of interference so always check

-Play the pass in with pace

-Close control

Passing Activity #1 (20 mins)

Set up: 20 x 20 grid; partner up with one team of 8 players with remaining players as defenders

Instruction: successful pass through a gate to a teammate will be a goal at any gate throughout the grid. Be sure to remind them about looking up and weight of the pass so that the opponent does not steel the ball. (Add defender; defense scores by knocking or stealing ball). 1 minute intervals. Losing team does burpees.

Coaching Points: body mechanics, balance, weight of pass, accuracy, vision, tactical application to the game as in selection of pass and timing of runs and pass.

Progression: pass with right only, pass with left only. Add a defender.

Diagonal Passing (20 mins)

Organization:

Instructions:

- three players at atime attack goal, playing diagonal passes to move up the field before a low cross and finish

- two players in the box for cross (Opposite mid/and fwd/cm)

Coaching Points:

- Pace of pass, should be hard enough not to be cut out (inside of foot, toe up, keep it on the floor)

- Speed of play, meet the pass (check off cone), limit touches to two (I don't want one touch, passes are longer and I want consistent accuracy)

- Communicate (call for passes, look for eye contact), especially the center mid/fwd who must be on his toes/head on a swivel reacting and playing the ball through to the opposite side he receives it

- low hard strike to keepers feet, challenge him

- Timing of runs, near post, back post

- Encourage crosser to dribble in if runs are late, or no attacking option present (still looks to make a short pass)

Progressions:

- Add a defender that tracks CM and defends in the box

- Add a 2nd defender that tracks Opposite mid/that crashes into box

- Add a 3rd defender that Fwd/CM combines (Give & Go) around with crosser, which then defenders cross
