Rondo Transfer

Organization:

10 x 10 or 15 x 15 depending on numbers

Player 1 (defender) : 2 (attackers) ratio

Max amount of player in a grid = 5 attackers

Instructions:

1. Possession game where there is 1 defender every 2 players. Defender tries to steal the ball. Attackers try to possess. (Much like keep away)

2. Defender tries to steal the ball and play it to a red neutral player on the outside. If he/she does they they must return to their box and try to maintain possession while two new defenders come in.

3. If the ball goes out the defender stays the same (defenders must steal the ball away to become an attacker)

4. Two boxes are combined. One box represents the yellow team, while the other represents the blue. Teams must get 7 passes in order to determine which group will be starting first as the defending team. The team that does not get 7 passes, must send two (x) players over to try and steal/touch the ball before returning. The team in possession may earn a point by passing the ball 7 times with defenders in the area. IF defenders are able to win the ball back in less than 10 seconds and play it to a red their team will gain a point.

5. First team to 3 points wins, and switches with the neutrals.

Coaching Points:

1. Communication

2. Awareness of space/pressure etc.

3. Try to play to back foot and turn to switch ball in other direction when receive it if possible

4. Quality/weight of passes.

5. Angles/distances of support

6. Constantly re-evaluate your position (can I be in a better position?)

7. Defenders decision once they gain possession. Find an open target out wide.

2 Team Possession

Organization:

30 x 30 yard area

3 Teams: 2 Attacking (Possessing the ball), 1 Defending

1 Ball

** Small groups of 7; 3v3 +1N, incorporate coaches if needed. DO NOT INCREASE NUMBERS **

Instructions:

1. The two attacking team's objective is to maintain possession of the ball away from the defending red players that operate inside of the area

2. The blue attacking players on the outside cannot be tackled or enter the playing area

3. If the defending players win the ball they must attempt to keep possession and pass the ball 3 times before becoming an attacking team. Once they maintain possession, they will expand and take the place of the outside blue team, and the blue will play within the free area.

4. The attackers should look to utilize the player in the middle when a good opportunity arises to play in.

5. "Winners" play in the middle area. The team who regains possession must work on expanding first.

6. Team who loses possession of the ball  becomes the defending team.

Coaching Points:

1. Keep the ball moving to try and stretch the defending players

2. The players on the inside (yellow) should look to receive the ball at an angle and play quickly to the outside

3. Weight and accuracy of the pass

4. Decision making when to pass inside and when to maintain possession on the outside

5. Use of wall pass and support to get around the opposition.

Progressions / Regressions:

(P1) - Limit touches on the outside to one or two touches

(P2) - Reduce to two teams

(P3) - Add middle triangle/square where a player (GK/CM) plays neutral and the teams look to connect. 2 points - Give and Go. 1 point - connection and maintaining possession.

Pressure box

Organization:

25 x 15

3 teams of 4 (or any number)

1 Ball; Extras near by

Instructions:

1. Two teams work together to move and possess the ball, while the other team, on defense, tries the steal the ball away and dribble out of bounds.

2. The objective is for the defending team to earn points by finding an open neutral to play the ball to or scoring in the goal. The two other teams must try to prevent them from scoring points.

Play for a set time or to X amount of points, and rotate the team's responsibilities

Coaching Points:

1. Body Shape - Side body shape; Using arms to feel the defender; Low center of gravity (knees bent; expand body area)

2. Approach - Creating space: movement away from the ball; Checking in: movement towards the ball; Awareness: Can we take the ball on our front/back foot depending on pressure; Ball furthest from defender, body in between.

3. Surface technique - Sole of the foot, using the foot furthest from the opposing player; Rolling with the inside or outside of the foot based on pressure.

4. Awareness - Timing and quality of pass; Timing of movement away/toward ball; Creating space; Decision making once full pressure is added (front or back foot)

5. Execution of move - Ability to hold off opposing player; Placing the ball on the furthest foot from the defender; Finding space to turn or recognizing when to use support.

6. Decisions - Team with numbers up, loses possession, how quickly can we apply pressure? Defenders who regained possession, (1) Is the goal open for us to shoot, if not (2) can we create space to go to goal by passing the ball?

* Progression for 3 team possession *

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): 4 v 3 with Recovering Midfield

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): 4 v 3 with Recovering Midfield

4 v 3 with Recovering Midfield

Organization:

Full field (with expanded widths)

Divided into thirds, as shown

Total: 7v7

Outside Midfielders playing in the flanks

1 Ball (Restarts with Coach)

Instructions:

1. 2v3 in the Attacking third

2. Defenders must regain possession and play to the outside midfielders in the middle third.

3. On transition, midfielders may attack in the final third down the flank. IF they combine with the forward or center-mid in the box through a give and go they may enter the box as well.

4. If the midfielders defense is under pressure and is looking to regain possession, they must come back to support/help mark another player to create balance.

5. If a team shoots and misses, they player who shot the ball must go retrieve it. (Quick transition for the other team).

Coaching Points:

1. Expand when we regain possession by using the width.

2. Compress when under attack.

3. Midfielders awareness to get back and help the defense.

4. Defenders (+ Outside Mids) positioning on the field. Pressure - Balance - Cover.

5. Ability to combine on attack to isolate and get behind a defender.

6. Why do we want to create width?

Layering Restrictions:

1. Midfield in the attacking and defensive third can only move within the outside channels = reinforce creating width to get out of defensive third, and to stretch the opposing team's defense out in the attacking third.

2. Midfield can enter the attacking third IF they combine with the forwards on a give and go or overlapping run = encourage players to draw opposing defenders out wide to combine around and minimize their numbers infront of the goal.

3. On attack, one defender can leave his/her third and enter the middle third in order to support the play (preferably defender on the side of the attacking play) = providing a supporting option to play the ball back to a switch point of attack.

4. Defenders, if they regain the ball must pass it left to right or right to left before moving the ball forward and out of the defensive third. Reminder - Midfield can move anywhere in the middle third. = Allows time for Midfield to compress and shift with the ball, denying the opportunity for the other team to get out and find their target player. Pressure - Cover - Balance.

5. On defense, one forward may leave his or her third and enter the middle third to check back for the ball = encouraging our forwards to provide themselves as a quick option for our defense if they regain possession. CP: Move where the ball travels. Left to right / Right to left
