Organisation

- Type of practice - Drill

- The session consists of 10 Players with 1 team made up of 3 centre midfielders (CM), 2 full backs (FB), 2 centre backs and a number 9 (9).

- The ball starts with the Feeder (GK when in relation to the SSG) who plays into either one of the centre back. That centre back then plays to the opposite centre back who will play through the centre midfielders and full backs.

- I will be working with the 8 blue players in regard to combination play and patterns of play through the 3 centre midfielders and full backs.

1st Pattern

Key Factors - 1st Pattern

- As the ball gets transferred from one centre back to the other the deeper lying centre midfielder must drop in between the two centre backs to receive the ball. The deeper lying CM then plays to either one of the other centre midfielders, who will then play to one of the full backs.

-The full back must travel down the channel and either play a pass or cross the ball into the number 9 and the supporting centre midfielder.

- Opposite full back stays back to protect the balance of the team.

Coaching Points and Detail

-Movement to receive and support play

-Angles and distances to receive the ball

-Body position and first touch to play forward

-The quality of pass

-Width and Depth of the 3 centre midfielders

-Defensive support from full backs not involved

-Communication

-Number 9s timing of run

2nd Pattern

Key Factors - 2nd Pattern - Full Back Coming Inside

- As the ball gets transferred from one centre back to the other, the deep lying midfielder (1) once again gets in position to receive the ball.

- But this time, as this transfer is happening, the full back that is on the same side as the centre back receiving the ball must then get into a position higher up the pitch. The guidline would be in between the highest midfielder (3) and 2nd centre midfielder (2) but on the touch line to stretch the pitch.

- The centre back who receives the ball must drive into the space in front with the ball. As this is happening, the 2nd centre midfielder comes short to receive the ball, which creates space in behind for the full back to come inside into the midfield area.

- The centre back then plays to the deep lying midfielder, who plays into the full back in the space.

- This time the deep lying centre midfielder comes back to create a balance in the team, due to the opposite full back being used as an option high and wide on the opposite side of the pitch.
