Component 1 (5 mins)

Component 1

CM plays pass into one defender who plays pass up to attackers for a 2v2 towards goal

If maroons win the ball they look to drive over the line

Play goes from one side to the other

Coaching points

As soon as pass is played up look to squeeze up and put immediate pressure on the ball

One player presses and one player drops to give cover

When ball is transferred from attacker to attacker defenders must switch

Defender shows the ball down the line

Be patient and know when to make tackle

GK give good communication and be prepared to come out and collect

Component 1 variation (5 mins)

Component 1 variation

CM makes pass then looks to recover around the lines to make a 3v3 up aginst 2 attackers and a striker who constantly plays there

Coaching points

As we now face an overload the defenders must look to delay and force the play wide

CM must recover quickly and think about getting behind the ball

Defenders must be patient and think about not leaving the space in behind for the striker

If we press the striker then other defender must narrow and kill the space in behind

Must look to get tight to the striker and force backwards

If ball is wide then fullback force down the line and be patient

Constant communication across the back 4

Component 2 (10 mins)

Component 2

6v6 in large zone

If ball is played into maroon striker then we must look to get support with one run going in to support

Looking to create overloads against maroons in larger zone

Coaching points

Back 4 work across in relation to the ball and strikers

2 centre midfielders look to screen and stop the ball into the strikers

If ball is in the wide area then fullback looks to force the play down the line

Rest of back 4 should get set to deal with cross (open bodies and look to tuck in)

If the ball does go into the attacking zone look to push the line up and get us out

If players are pulled out to position look to recover and have a solid back 4

Progression

Number back 4 1-6

If coach shouts number then player must run out to end zone line and recover

Phase of play 1 (10 mins)

Ball out in wide area

If the ball does get worked wide then we are looking for the fullback to edge out and force the play down the line

DO NOT step out the back line too early and leave space in behind

Be patient dont over commit

Centre midfielder closest to the ball look to screen the pass into the striker

Back 4 moves over in relation to the ball

What if - If the fullback does go down the line and gets past the fullback

Centre back has two options

IF wide midfielder is set up to put the ball into the box then retreat and get set for the cross

IF wide midfielder drives in then centre half steps out and looks to delay

If this does happen then fullback must recover back into centre back area, as well as centre midfielders dropping back into the box and getting bodies in to deal with crosses

Defenders must open body to see man and ball

Phase of play 2 (10 mins)

Ball into strikers feet

Maroon centre midfielder on the ball makes misplaced pass to oppostion centre midfielder

Green midfielder must play pass into strikers feet

Maroon centre back must go tight and stop green striker from turning

As maroon centre back steps out then other three must narrow in order to deny space in behind

2 centre midfielders must recover quickly in order to deny space

Must make sure they track runs

Look to force the play wide and backwards at this point

IF the striker does turn and face up centre back

It is even more important that 3 get compact and narrow

Centre back closest to the ball must put pressure on the ball and force the play wide in order to give recovering centre midfielders time

Can centre midfielders recover to deny midfield runners to receive in space
