systems of play

This is the starting formation for both teams. I have never seen the USA women's team play a 4-3-3 and even the announcer commented on the new set up. China packed the defense with a lot of numbers, which prohibited a lot of offensive movement. Their defense reacted rather than acted quite frequently. As a result, the US was on the offensive end a lot.

1. The US uses a lot of quick, short passes, utilizing the midfielders a lot.

2. The back four remain very organized and keep their shape really well. They quickly cut off overlaps by the outside mids from China

3. Their defense plays zonal with a few exceptions when they man up.

4. Solo, the US GK, only touched the ball a handful of times the first half and used her feet only.

5. China's main offense is a combination play of short, short, long, outside to the midfielders. The US is quite good at shutting that down.

6. China's defense teams up on the forwards, yet neglects to mark the midfielders coming down for runs.

US short passes and switch

1. The US uses short passes to move the ball up the field once they have stolen it from China.

2. This would require China to shift over and provide the US with a numbers up situation on the far side of the field for a cross.

3. The US pushes the defense forward frequently which provides numbers up and options for short passes. They use this tacticewell, keeping the ball in constant movement and getting close chances.

4. China's defense mainly marks the 3 forwards, in particular, Leroux and O'Reilly. They often have more than one girl on them, which opens up Holliday in the middle, as well as the other forward, Press.

US Corner Kick 1

1. The US lines up on the box and has one player on the GK. The 3 furtherest players from the kicker make runs into the box.

2. The kick is long and the US player heads it at the goal, it is deflected by the defense on the goal line and then the US player becomes offsides so China gets the kick.

US free kick outside the box

1. US sets up the kick outside the box. The kicker kicks into the wall.

2. The ball settles to the side of the wall and US takes another shot which goes over the cross bar.

3. As the diagram shows, China leaves a lot of space for the various US players to move. The player to the left of the box was wide open for a possible pass and shoot.

4. There has been a lot of aggressive pressure by the US and they are definitely faster, yet, China should organize better on defense and consider a different system of play. It seems that the 4-5-1 is not working because it is actually turning into a 6-3-1, which is leaving the US mids open way too often.

US corner kick 2

1. Holliday sends the ball to the near post, deflects off of the China defender.

2. US runs in for shot and goes out of bounds. China goal kick.

China does a pretty good job covering the space during this corner kick. However, US is much faster getting to loose balls than China. They sit back and allow US too many uncontested shots. By the 33rd minute, US had 14 shots to their 0.

The 4-5-1 that China is using is causing zero forward movement when they attempt to counter attack. They move to the other side of the field very infrequently in the first half and take no shots. On the other hand, the short passes seem to really work for the US because they are constantly moving and finding open players. Their passes are very precise and have good pace which is the reason this style of play is working right now.

Near miss on pass behind the defensive line

1. This is an excellent play because the timing and pace on the ball is expertly done by O'Reilly.

2. The ball begins on the right side with a take over from O'Reilly, who runs the ball down the side line.

3. China's back line is holding nicely, but Press signals to O'Reilly for a ball behind the defense, which she delivers perfectly.

4. The GK comes out to cut Press's angle off and she shoots to the side of the goal.

China got lucky because they left Leroux available on the left for a deflection as well as Holliday in the middle. Both of these players were completely left alone.

Leroux vs GK

1. China defender attempts a pass back to the GK.

2. GK and Leroux challenge for the ball and the GK gets a lucky clear away from Leroux.

3. The defenders attempt to get back to help, however, you can see that they are not quick enough for the US players. They are always reacting to movement by the US players and the US often get goal side of the defenders for the advantage.
