Ball mastery warm-up

Organization:

1. Open area.

2. Every player with a ball.

Instructions:

1. Coach demonstrates various pick-up skills (e.g. fish, scoop, roll flick).

2. Following pick-ups, players perform juggling challenge.

a) Bounce, juggle, catch x10,

b) Bounce, juggle, catch, bounce, juggle, bounce, juggle, catch (add one bounce-juggle after each turn)

3. After 3-5 minutes, players dribble in open area.

Coaching Points:

1. Head up.

2. Soft, controlled touches.

3. Use of both feet.

4. Light on toes.

Progressions:

1. Ensure players keep track of their scores. Encourage players to set and break records.

2. Introduce basic Goal keeping principles-Bounce catch shuffle, Players will experiemnt with goal-keeper gloves to get a feel for the position.

Dribbling Warm-Up

Organization:

1. Red square - 8x8yds.

2. Blue square - 40x40yds.

3. Every player with a ball.

Instructions:

1. Players dribble inside big square looking to avoid small square.

2. Introduce Messi and Ronaldo dribbling.

3. When coach calls a color (blue or red) players have to dribble into that area.

4. Competition - do not be the last to get into the square.

5. End with knockout game.

Coaching Points:

1. Head up to observe space.

2. Tight space/small area - dribble like Messi.

3. Lots of space/big area - dribble like Ronaldo.

4. Messi - pinky toe, one touch per step, close control.

5. Ronaldo - instep, one touch every 2-3 steps, bigger touch into space.

6. Look up every time ball is played out of feet.

Progressions:

1. Knockout game - players dribble in blue square and look to kick each other's ball out of the area.

2. If a player is knocked out, he can get back in by performing skill(s) inside the red square.

3) If a player is knocked out, he becomes a defender.

Technical Non/Semi-Opposed

Organization:

1. Players distributed evenly at corners as shown.

2. Every player with a ball.

3. Red square - 8x8yds.

4. Blue square - 40x40yds.

Instructions:

1. First player from each white team runs through square upon making eye contact.

2. As soon as they are out of the square, the first players from blue group do the same.

3. Process repeats for set time (2-3 minutes).

4. Players must perform correct move at red cone before running through square.

MOVES

Feint

oLean to one side dropping your shoulder

oPlant the same side foot to the side of the ball

oTake the ball away with the outside of the opposite foot

Roll

oTake the ball inside the opponents tackling radius

oDrag the ball across the body with sole of the foot

oTake the ball past the defender with inside of the opposite foot

Scissors

oMove the foot around the front of the ball finishing on the outside of the ball

oDrop the shoulder as the foot plants

oTake the ball away using the outside of the opposite foot

Coaching Points:

1. Connection with teammate - eye contact.

2. Weight and direction of first touch - positive (into space).

3. Speed of approach - slow down as you get close to target.

4. Technical execution of move.

5. Timing of move outside Tackling Radius).

6. Accelerate away.

Progressions:

1. Work on both sides (right and left).

2. Competition - place balls on top of cones. Teams lose a point if they knock ball down.

Fully Opposed

Organization:

Instructions:

1) One player starts as the defender

2) The next player in line is the attacker, they dribble toward the player trying to beat them 1 v 1 to the goal.

3) If the defender steals the ball they may socre on the angled goal on the end line.

4) Once a person plays offense they immediatly transistion to defense, the next player in line can start as soon as the ball is out of play or in the goal.

Coaching Points:

1) Move quickly to attack opponent

2) Use moves to beat defender

3) Shot on goal

4) Change quickly from attacker to defender

5) Perform move at th correct time.

Progressions:

R-Passive defender

Organization:

1. 40x30.

2. Teams set up as shown.

Instructions:

1. Free play: 3v3.

2. Restarts: kick-in or dribble in. No corners.

Coaching Points:

1. Recognition of space.

2. Triangles - support at 10 and 2 o'clock.

3. Movement and angles of support to create space.

4. Positive mentality - get forward.

5. Recognition of 1v1 situations - attack.
