Warm Up

Organization:

Two lines of players and two lines of cones.

Instructions:

At this age, it is imperative that each player is properly warmed up performing a range of movements and dynamic stretches. Each player will follow the player in front and perform the designated exercise or stretch.

Coaching Points:

Gradually build up the running speed. Make sure the players are properly stretching every muscle for 10-15 seconds. Allow the players to have free time for personal static stretching.

Progressions:

The stretches will start from the neck and work all the way down to the ankles. Each player will progressively build up from a jogging pace to a sprint.

Main Theme

Organization:

One half of the field will be used for quick passing and applied pressure. The second half will be used for 1v1 attack versus defence with and without the ball.

Instructions:

Players will be in pairs passing the ball back and forth. On the fifth pass the player who makes that pass will run in and press as quickly as possible and vice versa. In the second field each player will have the opportunity to beat the other player in a race that can finish on either line.

Coaching Points:

Defenders applying pressure must be on their toes and ready to press as soon as the ball is released. This should then progress to an arched run in order to shut off an angle. If the player attacks aggressively, the defender must have the balance and mindset to pivot side to side. In the second field, the defender will must have the ability to react to feints and short sprints. If they manage to block a shot at goal it will be a point to them. They must be able to adjust their feet and body position accordingly.

Progressions:

During the passing sequences, the defenders will pressure in different ways appropriate to how the attacker leads with the ball. In the second field, a ball will be introduced in the races and then goals.

Organization:

Two teams. One will be the defenders and the others will be the attackers before the switch round. 1v1.

Instructions:

The defender will pass the ball out and the rush out to press as quickly as possible although not "diving in". The defender will pivot backwards before waiting for that vital moment they can steal the ball. If the steal the ball they can score.

Coaching Points:

The defender should press quickly after passing. They must then decide whether the direction the attacker is going in is appropriate to show them an angle. This will be done by arching their run. If the attacker runs straight then the defender will have to pivot and wait for that vital moment to tackle or block a shot.

Progressions:

Defenders will become attackers. Their is the opportunity for a quick transition as the defenders will have the chance to score if they win the ball.

Conditioned Game

Organization:

4v4 or 5v5. Two teams and two goals.

Instructions:

Pair each player up. The rule is that those players can only tackle or attack each other. Aside from this condition, it is a normal scrimmage.

Coaching Points:

Each player can only tackle each other forcing the defender to stay with the attacker and press as soon as the attacker has the ball. This also encourages lots of movement off the ball.

Progressions:

Switch pairs around and if the game is successful, take away conditions but analyse to see if the players are still fulfilling their principles when defending 1v1.
