Opposed / Unopposed (30 mins)

Opposed and Unopposed Posession

Players are numbered. Teams pass and move in their own square. When numbers are called, corresponding players enter opposition square and attempt to win ball from the other team. Players have 10 seconds to win the ball so tempo and pressure must be high. If defenders win ball they get a point for their team, if team keeps ball they win a point. Play to 10.

Coaching Points:

- Receive with head up to recognize passing options

- Players move as the ball moves to provide options for receiver

- Constant adjustments to provide passing angles

- Communicate verbally and visually

- Limit your time on the ball

Progression:

We should have enough for 4 teams so I think it will be good to set up a league table and have all 4 teams compete for the bulk of the session. Adding a competitive element will increase the defensive pressure and force the increased speed of play we are trying to encourage.

During the unopposed periods, if the ball or any player stops moving, that team loses a point. This will build the habit of constant adjustment to the ball and limiting the time the ball spends at any one player's feet. If the ball leaves the square during the unopposed periods that team loses a point, should encourage focus on the accuracy of passes since players will naturally rush the process to avoid the ball stopping.
