Warm up

Organization:

Have the players in your group partner up (if there is an odd number have one group of three).

Have them stand roughly 10 yds apart (the distance can vary depending on ability level).

Instructions:

Have one player start with the ball in his/her hand. Have them volley the ball back and forth between each other, using proper shooting technique.

Coaching Points:

Foot should be shaped as such: toe down, heel up, ankle locked.

Strike the ball with laces or the "sweet spot" (which is the hardest part of the foot, slightly off center toward the inside) through the center of the ball.

Keep your weight over the ball to keep in low and driven.

If done properly, you should land on your shooting foot, because your momentum is going forward.

Progressions:

You can extend the distance the players stand apart.

Main Activity

Organization:

Two mini goals, with a "jail" (the box set by cones) next to it as shown.

One cone or gate in front of each goal, distance varies with age/ability.

Two teams, one team in front of each goal.

Instructions:

The player in the front of the line tries to strike it on goal.

If the player misses, he/she goes to jail.

A player can come out of jail (one at a time) if their teammate scores a goal.

The team wins when all the other team's players are in jail.

The coach can yell jailbreak at anytime, to free all the players in jail to keep the game going longer if needed.

Coaching Points:

Keep your weight over the ball.

Strike through the ball, making sure to land on your shooting foot.

Keep your toe pointed down, and keep it down through the follow through.

Strike the ball with laces or the "sweet spot" (the hardest part of your foot, off center to the inside), the main point is to strike it through the top of the foot, not the toe if possible.

Your plant foot should be pointed toward your target.

Make sure you clear your hips through keeping them square to your target.

Progressions:

Make them use their weaker foot only.
