Passing (20 mins)

Set Up

*Two areas set up as illustrated with half-way line in place.

*Each target player has a ball, he must play into one of his team-mates who find ways to pass to opposite target.

*Always receive pass from same target player.

Progressions

*Always play forwards

*Play one touch

*Play the way your facing

*Competitive - 1 ball

Learning Objectives

1. Positions on pitch, one player over half-way line, one below.

2. Movement of both players, when ball is played to target player must move to another position.

3. Body shape when receving

4. Movement of supporting player

1v1 (20 mins)

Set Up

*20x10 with a goal at each end and a scoring zone.

*Red player starts behind the mannequin, shifts the ball then passes into the blue player, he then becomes the defender and presses the ball.

*The blue players objective is to get into either scoring zone and then score.

*If the ball is won by the defender or oes out of play the game ends.

Progressions

- If the defender wins possession the game continues

- Defender must take the ball into one half of the pitch, then attack the opposite goal

- Attack must control the ball tight to his feet, drawing in the defender

Pressure, Cover & Balance (30 mins)

Practice Organisation:

*Mark out an area and split it into 4 channels.

*Players set up as illustrated.

*Players look to transfer the ball to each other, defenders must stay in own channel. You can only regain possession by intercepting the ball.

Learning Objectives:

1. Nearest player must press the ball showing towards team mates - curve run.

2. Second player must be correct distance from team-mate, needs to be in a position to stop foward pass.

3. Third player does the same as second.

4. Make sure there are small gaps, and player are not in a straight line.

Pressure, Cover & Balance (40 mins)

Practice Organisation

Area 40x30 yards set out in equal thirds with goals at each end.

14 players (+2 GKs), with defenders out numbered 3v4 in each end third.

Practice starts with Neutral players in middle third, serve ball into Attackers & support play from behind, without entering end third.

Objective of practice, Defenders play to pvevent Attackers from scoring, gain possession and in to Neutral player to score one point.

Rotate roles of players.

Details

Distance between 3 defenders when being attacked by opponents.

Communication, changing roles and working with GK as sweeper.

Deflecting attacks away from central goal scoring areas.

Balanced, controlled 1v1 defending skills.

Defenders identifying opportunity to pass or run with ball on gaining possession.

Key Coaching Points

- Blocking shots.

- Pressing man on ball and employing delaying tactics to avert attack.

- Marking and covering

- Winning ball and quickly playing forward to Neutral player.

SSG - Playing Through the Thirds (30 mins)

Learning Objectives: Looking at playing out from the GK and defenders in a SSG. Again focussing on their starting position, body shape and first touch.

Technical: Body shape to recieve, first touch, passing.

Tactical: Positions when GK gets the ball, how do we create space to get the ball from our GK.

Physical: Agility, Stamina, Speed.

Psychological/Social: Dealing with success and failure, Confidence, Concentration, Works well within a team.
