Description

A session to work on two major topics:

(1) Awareness: Where is the space? Where are the defenders? Where are my teammates?

(2) First touch

These two topics are interrelated when it comes to receiving: we have to be aware of the field and the space in order to take a good first touch.

Technical Mastery (20 mins)

Organization:

4-6 players in the center by the big cone. One ball. Use small cones to make four 3yd gates, as shown.

Instructions:

First player dribbles wide to start the drill. Second player checks out to receive a pass through the gate. Next player checks out 90 degrees onward to receive a pass through the next gate. Etc. After receiving/passing players return to the middle cone and await their next turn to check and receive.

Coaching Points:

-Check wide to create the space.

-Timing: when to check?

-Call/point for the ball.

-On your toes to receive.

-Body in line with the pass.

-Open body shape

-Two touches: Receive on back foot, play with the inside of other foot

-After pass is made from server, check your shoulder to look upfield (i.e. HEAD ON A SWIVEL)

Progressions:

-The check must be made by backpedalling into the space.

-Check closer to the gate to play a quick double pass with the passer, then back-pedal and open up to receive the longer pass.

Four box game (25 mins)

Organization:

25x25 square. 4v4+2. 5yd boxes marked out in each corner.

Instructions:

The objective is to work the ball into a box for a point. Once you have scored in a box you must move to a new box. The game is live the whole time, no stoppages after a score.

(1) You score by dribbling into the box. (This is a more suitable starting point for younger ages.)

(2) P - First touch has to take you out of the box.

(3) P - Two players have to take a touch in the box. (This should encourage quick one-twos in the corners.)

(4) P - Balls in the air. Use blue cones to add a 3yd "lava zone" around each box. Balls can't touch down in the lava zone on their way into the box, a pass must be made in the air. (Balls can touch the lava zone on their way out of the box so that receivers can play to ground.)

Coaching Points:

Movement off the ball

Angles of support

Body open to see as much of the field as possible

(1)

Attack the space

Balls into space vs to feet

Runs in behind

(2)

(4)

Look for the long change over the top

Progressions:

- 2- or 3-touch maximum
